New York-based Japanese contemporary artist Rekishi Yamaguchi returns to Japan for the first time in 10 years! An exhibition showcasing his latest works will be held at Shibuya Parco.

Event Date:2020.10.31-11.16
Oct 16, 2020
PARCO Co., Ltd. will be holding an exhibition of new works by New York-based contemporary artist Reki Yamaguchi at Shibuya PARCO's "PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO." The exhibition coincides with Yamaguchi's return to Japan for the first time in 10 years. The exhibition features seven new works featuring Yamaguchi's signature brushstrokes. Measuring 2.7m high x 4m wide, these new works are the largest ever exhibited in Japan featuring brass strokes, showcasing dynamic and meticulous brushstroke constructions of impressive scale. Other works on display include a new work that further evolves from his signature work, "OUT OF BOUNDS." A recreation of Yamaguchi's New York studio will be presented, creating a spatial presentation that evokes a visit to Yamaguchi's studio. In addition to early works, including those created during his time as a university prep school student in the early 2000s, the exhibition will also feature Yamaguchi creating artwork directly on the walls of the venue, allowing visitors to witness his work up close, providing a bird's-eye view of Yamaguchi's artistic career from its early days to the present. In addition to a special exhibition and sale of a limited number of edition prints in which Yamaguchi Reki paints on photographs by photographer Konami Jiro, commemorative products for the exhibition will also be on sale.

Artist profile | Profile

Yamaguchi RekiYamaguchi Reki
Yamaguchi Reki | Meguru Yamaguchi
Yamaguchi Reki was born in Shibuya, Tokyo in 1984. He moved to the United States in 2007 and is currently a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn, New York.

Since his early works, he has consistently focused on the basic element of painterly expression, the brushstroke. In his representative series, OUT OF BOUNDS, he abandoned the conventional practice of painting on canvas, and based on the concept of "crossing stereotypes, rules, borders and boundaries, and expanding painting," he continues to create three-dimensional paintings in which the brushstroke itself transcends the framework of the canvas, as if existing in space.

Born in Shibuya Ward, he grew up experiencing the changing street culture of Ura-Harajuku in Tokyo from the 1990s to the early 2000s. After moving to New York, he has collaborated with iconic street brands such as ALIFE, BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB, FTC, and NIKE, which hold important positions in American street culture, as well as companies such as ISSEI MIYAKE MEN, LEVI'S, OAKLEY, and UNIQLO.
