Event Date:2020.10.09-2021.01.11
Oct 10, 2020

"DOUBLE FANTASY - John & Yoko" is a groundbreaking exhibition that allows visitors to relive the public and private history of one of the world's most famous and creative couples, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, through the messages and words they shared with the world, their music and artwork, and more than 100 pieces from their priceless private collection.

To celebrate the Tokyo exhibition opening on October 9th, the 80th anniversary of John Lennon's birth, we have released a statement from Yoko Ono and a video message from Sean Lennon!

[Statement from Yoko Ono Lennon]
We are incredibly pleased and grateful to be able to bring our "DOUBLE FANTASY - John & Yoko" exhibition to Japan. The Liverpool exhibition was special because it was John's hometown. Now it's being held in Tokyo, my hometown. It's a true fusion of East and West. We were a very simple couple who simply loved each other day after day.

I wanted to show the truth about us in our own words. Our love for each other was present in everything we did in our daily lives.

Japan was a place of peace for John, and his summers there with his son, Sean, were very important to him.
We realized we both had a strong interest in world peace. Even now, I feel like John and I are working together. I always feel his warmth beside me.

DOUBLE FANTASY – John & Yoko About:
"DOUBLE FANTASY - John & Yoko," the large-scale exhibition of John and Yoko's work, which was held in John's hometown of Liverpool and attracted an unprecedented 700,000 visitors, is finally coming to Tokyo!
The couple's story of "love and peace," spanning both their public and private lives, is recreated with groundbreaking curation. This most moving exhibition is finally coming to Tokyo. "DOUBLE FANTASY - John & Yoko" was a large-scale exhibition held at the Museum of Liverpool in John's hometown, England, from May 2018 to November 2019. Yoko herself was deeply involved in creating the exhibition, which was created "for John's hometown of Liverpool," and it drew such high praise and response for its overwhelming content that the exhibition was extended by seven months from the original schedule and attracted an unprecedented 700,000 visitors. On October 9, 2020, marking the 80th anniversary of John Lennon's birth and 40 years since his death, this much-anticipated exhibition will travel from John's hometown of Liverpool to Yoko's hometown of Tokyo. The world's first exhibition entirely dedicated to the words, messages, and works of John and Yoko, "DOUBLE FANTASY -John & Yoko" explores the personal and creative resonance of these legendary figures for the first time in their own words. The exhibition follows a chronological path, tracing the birth of these two geniuses—Yoko, a leading avant-garde artist, and John, a world-famous rock star—through their fateful meeting at London's Indica Gallery in 1966, their subsequent influence on each other's artistic careers, and their ongoing "IMAGINE PEACE" campaign.

Featuring over 100 pieces, including precious objects from Yoko's own private collection, the exhibition celebrates the meeting of two of the world's most creative artists, who expressed their deep and powerful love for one another through art, music, and film, while also conveying the intimacy of a life together.

John and Yoko used their fame and influence to launch groundbreaking campaigns for peace and human rights around the world (such as Bed-In and WAR IS OVER! (if you want it)), forever changing not only their own lives but also the landscape of art, music, and activism. The essential and universal message of peace and human rights that they conveyed through their love resonates today, and more so now than ever.

Exhibition Highlights:
✧ Yoko's "Ceiling Painting," "Painting to Hammer a Nail," and "Apple": John visited the Indica Gallery in London in 1966. This is where it all began.
✧ John's handwritten lyrics, including "Imagine," "In My Life," "Give Peace a Chance," "Happy Xmas (War is Over)," and "Woman."
✧ Grapefruit: An art book that Yoko gave John in 1967. Published in 1964, this book is a masterpiece of conceptual art, and John has said that it directly influenced the lyrics and ideas for "Imagine." In June 2017, Yoko was officially credited as a co-writer on "Imagine," in accordance with John's wishes.
✧ Bed In: Items such as guitars and message boards from the famous Bed In peace movement, which took place in Amsterdam and Montreal in 1969.
✧ "The Daily Howl" and more: This exhibition features a book full of illustrations that John made himself as a boy, as well as many of his unique line drawings.
✧ NEW YORK CITY T-shirts and other iconic clothing: The original T-shirt worn in Bob Gruen's portrait, and the outfit he wore at his wedding in Gibraltar.
✧ John's finally earned green card: After a five-year struggle to immigrate to the United States, he obtained his green card in 1976.
✧ Performance art pieces created by the two men: "WAR IS OVER! (if you want it)", "Plastic Ono Band", and their first collaborative work, "Acorn Peace".
✧ Wish Tree: A participatory art piece where any visitor to the exhibition can write their wishes, dreams, and messages for peace on strips of paper and tie them to the branches of a tree. After the exhibition closes, digital copies of the strips will be permanently preserved at the "IMAGINE PEACE TOWER" in Iceland, a symbol of John and Yoko's prayers for world peace.
Exhibition Highlights: "Japan Exclusive," a special exhibit corner for the Tokyo exhibition, including items on display for the first time in Japan. John, Yoko, and Sean are known for visiting Japan every year from 1977 to 1979 as a family after John won a green card in 1976, which allowed them to travel outside the United States. The "Japan Exclusive," a special exhibit corner for the Tokyo exhibition, will feature items that evoke their bond with Japan.
Original illustrations from John's Japanese language practice sketchbook: These are the original illustrations from a sketchbook that could be considered a Japanese language practice book, in which John wrote out Japanese words and expressions in romaji and illustrations to help him understand and learn the language. The original illustrations include "SABI (Sabi)," "AMAI, SUPPAI, SHOPPAI, KARAI, NIGAI (Sweet, Sour, Salty, Spicy, Bitter)," which will be shown in Japan for the first time, as well as hand-drawn illustrations that give a glimpse into John's playful personality, such as "KAZOKU (Family)."
Days in Karuizawa: Peaceful family photos (photographed by Nishimaru Fumiya/Nishi F. Saimaru) from Karuizawa, a place he visited frequently, along with the clothes he wore on those occasions.

Profile
[John Lennon Profile]
Born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. He was active as a member of The Beatles in the 1960s and was one of the greatest rock 'n' rollers of all time. He met Yoko Ono in 1966 and married her in March 1969. The two collaborated on conceptual art pieces such as "Acorn Peace," "Bed In," and "WAR IS OVER! (if you want it)," and were involved in peace movements. After releasing "Give Peace A Chance," they performed as the Plastic Ono Band. After The Beatles broke up, Lennon launched his solo career with the release of "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" in 1970. In 1971, he moved to New York with Yoko, and released "Imagine" that same year, which reached number one in the UK, US, and Japan. In 1972, he released "Some Time in New York City" with Yoko. He continued to release albums consistently, including "Mind Games" in 1973, "Walls and Bridges" in 1974, and "Rock'n'Roll" in 1975. In 1975, with the birth of his son Sean, he became a househusband and took a break from music for a while. In 1980, after a five-year silence, he re-emerged on the music scene with "Double Fantasy" under the name John & Yoko. However, on December 8th, shortly after the release, he was tragically shot and killed. He was 40 years old. The works and messages John left behind continue to resonate with people today and live on through the ages.

[Yoko Ono Profile]
Born in Tokyo on February 18, 1933. He began his artistic career in New York in the late 1950s. As a pioneer of conceptual art, avant-garde artist, and musician, Ono has continued to convey his message to the world for over 60 years. He published "Grapefruit" in 1964. He met John Lennon at a solo exhibition at London's Indica Gallery in 1966, and the two subsequently engaged in musical and artistic activities together. He released "Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins" in 1968. He has released 20 albums, including "Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band" in 1970, "Fly" in 1971, and his latest album, "WARZONE," in 2018. He has also participated in Japanese rock festivals, including the "One Step Festival" in Koriyama in 1974 and the "Fuji Rock Festival" in 2014. During his lifetime, John stated that "Imagine" was inspired by "Grapefruit," and in 2017, 46 years after its 1971 release, Yoko's name was officially credited as a co-writer, in keeping with John's wishes. Yoko consistently seeks to break down the boundaries between art and everyday life, and continues to advocate for love and peace in her own avant-garde way. "A dream we dream alone is just a dream. A dream we dream together becomes reality." (From "Now Or Never" (1973))
