Warehouse TERRADA Co., Ltd. will open "WHAT," a contemporary art collector's museum, on December 12, 2020.
With art storage as its core business, we have broadly expanded our support services, including art restoration, packaging, transportation, and exhibition, to preserve the passion of artists and the value embedded in artworks for future generations. "WHAT," opening in Tennoz, is a new art and culture facility aimed at showcasing the valuable art assets entrusted to us by collectors and stored by our company.
Exploring the ideal form of an art facility from the unique perspective of a warehouse company, we arrived at the idea of an art exhibition facility that opens up the works stored in our warehouse and creates opportunities for visitors to encounter works collected by Japan's leading collectors based on their own value standards. The facility's name, "WHAT (WARE HOUSE OF A R T)," embodies the unique concept of "opening up the warehouse and offering a glimpse into art that is not normally on display."
The facility will exhibit works by artists active in the contemporary art scene, along with the thoughts of collectors. Also, unlike the permanent exhibitions of typical art museums, the artworks will be rotated from time to time, creating a new viewing space that changes with each visit.
Furthermore, ARCHI-DEPOT Museum, the precursor to "WHAT," which has been storing and exhibiting works since 2016, will be renamed "ARCHI-DEPOT Project" and will continue to hold architecture-related exhibitions within the facility.

Through the operation of art and culture dissemination facilities such as the art supply lab "PIGMENT TOKYO" and Japan's largest gallery complex "TERRADA ART COMPLEX," our company is working to develop Tennozu into a major art hub, and "WHAT" is the first private company to receive planning approval as a cultural tourism base facility based on the "Cultural Tourism Promotion Act," which is led by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japan Tourism Agency. Going forward, with the new facility "WHAT" at its core, we will create a space for exhibitions open to a wider range of art fans, including artists, collectors, galleries, and other major stakeholders in contemporary art.

【Logo concept】
Based on the unique concept of "opening up the warehouse to peek at art that you wouldn't normally see," we were conscious of creating a sense of anticipation, originality, and the feel of a warehouse. The four letters "WHAT" appear and disappear in the composition to create a sense of treasury. We believe that art should be enjoyed with an open mind, without being bound by preconceptions, and so we have depicted it in a neutral form, stripped of all decorative elements.
