"LOVE: Forms of Love in Art" will open at the Mori Art Museum from Friday, April 26, 2013. Highlights include a new installation by Yayoi Kusama, an artist whose work has always focused on the theme of love, as well as an appearance from the virtual world of Vocaloid diva Hatsune Miku. Through the globally expanding "Hatsune Miku phenomenon," the exhibition will convey contemporary connections and enthusiasm. Furthermore, with the cooperation of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Tate (Tate Modern and Tate Britain), which serve as advisors to the Mori Art Museum, the exhibition will bring together masterpieces by Frida Kahlo, Francis Picabia, Giorgio de Chirico, and René Magritte. In particular, Frida Kahlo's "My Grandparents, Parents and I (Family Plan)" and Francis Picabia's "Portrait of a Lover" will be shown in Japan for the first time. The exhibition will also feature works by stars of the contemporary art world, including David Hockney, Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sophie Calle, Zhang Xiaogang, and Yoko Ono.
The exhibition focuses on "love," a fundamental human desire that has continued to inspire artists of all genres, past and present, from all over the world. Approximately 100 works, including masterpieces that have colored art history and ambitious new works selected from across time and region, will be exhibited in five sections: "What is Love?", "Two in Love," "When Love is Lost," "Family and Love," and "Expanding Love."
