Following its Tokyo run, the first full-scale retrospective of Thomas Ruff's work in Japan will run from December 10th to March 12th, 2017, at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Thomas Ruff is a member of the "Becher School" of photographers, having studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy alongside Andreas Gursky and Thomas Struth. He first gained attention for his monumental portraits, approximately two meters tall, and has since expanded his work to encompass a wide range of themes, including architecture, urban landscapes, nudes, and celestial bodies. This exhibition will showcase Thomas Ruff's work, from his early "Interieurs" series to his latest works, which will be shown for the first time. The lineup includes his early works, "Portrats," which brought him acclaim, and his "l.m.v.d.r." series, which features architectural works by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a leading figure in modernist architecture. The exhibition will also feature works such as "cassini" and "ma.r.s.", which use images of planets like Saturn and Mars taken by NASA space probes, and "zycles," which uses 3D programs to recreate the lines created by various mathematical formulas and reconstruct them in a three-dimensional space on a computer. Also on display will be "photograms," which utilizes the photogram technique of placing objects on photosensitive paper and directly exposing them to light, thereby capturing the shadows and light that pass through them. Also on display will be "Substrate," which digitally processes images taken from Japanese manga and anime until they are unrecognizable. Approximately 160 pieces from 18 major series will be on display, including "nudes," which questions the visual and information space of the Internet age; "jpeg," which explores the deconstruction of digital images; and the new "press++" series. Additionally, an artist talk featuring Thomas Ruff himself will be held on December 10th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
