Sep 5, 2025
Miu Miu's short film project, "MIU MIU WOMEN'S TALES," was launched in 2011. Featuring internationally acclaimed female film directors, the series has produced 29 films to date, exploring the theme of femininity in the 21st century. Going beyond fashion expression, this endeavor to sharply capture society and culture from a female perspective has long attracted attention as a symbol of Miu Miu's cultural activities.

30th installment, "FRAGMENTS FOR VENUS" - Director Alice Diop depicts the act of "seeing"
Her latest work, the 30th installment, "FRAGMENTS FOR VENUS," was created by French film director Alice Diop. Utilizing the perspective she has cultivated through documentaries, she sharply questions the relationship between the black female body and art history. Showing a black woman walking through a museum and another walking through Brooklyn, her images visualize the way black women have been treated in Western art to date, and present a new form of "Venus."

Inspired by poetry and an "act of repair"
The idea for this work comes from the poem "Voyage of the Sable Venus" by American Poet Laureate Robin Coste Lewis. Inspired by this poem, which focuses on the bodies of black women depicted in Western art, Alice created this work as "an act of repair that affirms my own existence." While the video progresses quietly, it is imbued with political intent, prompting the viewer to reexamine the act of "seeing" itself.

The resonating power of music and the presence of women
The video ends with the song "Thus Sayeth the Lorde" by musician Michelle Ndegeocello. Expressing the ideas of black female poet Audre Lorde in the form of slam poetry, the song resonates with the visuals and is a powerful anthem celebrating the presence of black women.

Visual beauty woven together from fashion and storytelling
In "MIU MIU WOMEN'S TALES," not only the cast and story have played an important role, but also the Miu Miu collections. Clothing reinforces the story, sometimes highlights conflicts and functions as a device to reflect the inner lives of the characters. In "FRAGMENTS FOR VENUS," Miu Miu clothing emphasizes the presence of the characters and adds depth to the visual poem.

A cultural initiative that resonates globally
Now in its 30th installment, "MIU MIU WOMEN'S TALES" goes beyond simple brand footage and has established international acclaim as a cultural project that presents a multifaceted portrayal of modern women. The film will premiere in the Venice Days section of the Venice International Film Festival in August 2025, and will begin streaming worldwide on the streaming service MUBI from September 15th.

Alice Diop / Screenwriter and Director
French film director, born in 1979. Through his incisive documentaries of marginalized communities, such as La Permanence (2016) and Vers la tendresse (2016), he has established himself as a key figure in chronicling the realities of contemporary society. His breakthrough feature, Saint-Omer (2022), not only marked a decisive shift towards fiction, but also won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Luigi De Laurentiis Award for Best New Director at its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Inspired by his observations of the trial of a Senegalese woman accused of infanticide for abandoning her infant daughter, the film transforms a court proceeding into a profound meditation on motherhood, migration, and justice. Critics have compared it to Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, Céline Sciamma has called Saint-Omer, A Defendant a "cinematic poem," and the film's rigorously formal approach has been widely praised as an "intelligent" examination of the limits of storytelling in addressing the human experience.
