The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Ueno Park, Tokyo) will be holding the "Yoshida Hiroshi: 70 Years After His Death" exhibition (organized by Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, The Mainichi Shimbun, and Nikkei Inc.) from January 26 to March 28, 2021.

Born in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) began his career in Western-style painting. He developed his own unique style and technique through numerous overseas experiences, which exposed him to both Eastern and Western art. Having demonstrated his talent as a painter, Yoshida first ventured into woodblock printing in the latter half of his career, breaking new ground. He ventured deep into the mountains and secluded valleys, mastering his own perspective on nature and employing a high level of skill that even impressed Western experts, to delicately depict the flow of water and the shifting of light. Marking the 70th anniversary of the artist's death, this exhibition brings together a selection of Yoshida's most representative woodblock prints, from his earliest works to his most notable works, along with woodblock prints and sketchbooks, to present the full scope of Yoshida Hiroshi's woodblock work, which sought to integrate Western realism with traditional Japanese printmaking techniques. This is your chance to enjoy the works of Yoshida Hiroshi, a painter who challenged the world and was beloved by artists such as Princess Diana and Freud.
