The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno will be holding a major retrospective of Edvard Munch, the master painter of one of the world's most famous paintings, "The Scream," titled "Munch: The Cry of a Resonating Soul," from October 27 to January 20, 2019.

This exhibition features approximately 100 works, including approximately 60 oil paintings and prints, centered around the exquisite collection of the Munch Museum in Oslo, the artist's hometown of Norway. A diverse range of Munch's works will be gathered in Tokyo, from masterpieces that vividly depict human emotion to powerful landscapes, life-size portraits, and beautiful prints. Of particular note is Munch's masterpiece, "The Scream," known worldwide. Of the four remaining works of "The Scream" aside from prints, the tempera and oil painting "The Scream" (1910?), currently housed at the Munch Museum in Oslo, will be making its long-awaited debut in Japan. The exhibition will be comprised of nine chapters. Tracing the life of love and conflict, the exhibition will showcase Munch's 60-year artistic career, including portraits of family and friends he painted in his youth, recurring motifs such as "The Kiss" and "The Vampire," and vibrantly colored landscapes from his later years. This major retrospective will explore the artist's entire career, tracing his powerful portrayal of the human psyche, including love, despair, jealousy, and loneliness.
