A two-part solo exhibition by Teruya Yuken is being held at CAPSULE and SUNDAY in Mishuku, Tokyo. Teruya is an artist known for his "Notice-Forest" series, in which he carves tree shapes from one side of paper bags.
Teruya transforms everyday disposable items such as McDonald's bags and fashion brand bags into beautiful, delicate works, suggesting that the paper was originally made of wood.
The first part of the exhibition will feature works from the "Notice-Forest" series, while the second part will feature bingata (dyeing) works that use traditional Okinawan dyeing techniques to address Okinawa's challenges. Also taking place at the same time, a solo exhibition, "Folded Reflections," at Maki Fine Arts will feature previously unseen works primarily from his private collection.
Teruya Yuken was born in Okinawa in 1973 and lives in New York. He graduated from the Painting Department of Tamagawa Art University in 1996 and completed a Master's degree at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2001. In 2002, he received the New Artist Award from the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2005, he attracted attention at exhibitions such as "Greater New York 2005" (MoMA PS1, New York) and the "Yokohama Triennale," and his works are collected by museums both in Japan and abroad. His major exhibitions include "Shapes of Space" (2007, Guggenheim Museum, New York), "100 Stories about Love" (2009, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Ishikawa), and solo exhibitions such as "My Great-Grandmother Was in the USA" (2010, Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo) and "Roppongi Crossing" (2010, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo).
