GINZA FASHION WEEK (GFW) kicked off on March 19th. The theme for this sixth edition is "Enjoy Ginza." Ginza Mitsukoshi will be introducing numerous events and projects under the theme of "Ginza Retro Modern." The event, held in collaboration with Ginza Mitsukoshi, Matsuya Ginza, and Printemps Ginza, aims to revitalize the area through fashion. In anticipation of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Ginza Mitsukoshi will be celebrating the 1960s, a time when Ginza-inspired items were popular. Based on the "Ivy League look" and "Miyuki-zoku" styles popular at the time, the event will offer carefully crafted items that blend modern sensibilities. On the 9th floor, a limited-time shop for VAN, the brand that sparked the Japanese Ivy League boom, will be available. The lineup will include apparel and merchandise, including Ginza Mitsukoshi exclusives and reproductions. The limited-edition varsity jacket Van gave to Michael Jackson has been reproduced, and the original patch is available in a set of three designs (10,290 yen). Other items include a six-pack Zippo set (50,000 yen), an emblem set (40,000 yen), and a logo sweatshirt (16,800 yen). A tanned leather clutch bag (25,200 yen) that faithfully recreates Van's popular paper bag from the 1960s is also available. A chronicle of the men's magazine Heibon Punch, first published in 1964, is also on display. On the third floor, a limited-time collaboration between Van and DOUBLE STANDARD CLOTHING will open. The shop offers a cute, modern take on the 1960s Ivy League look. A sweatshirt jacket (33,600 yen) will be available exclusively at the Ginza store, along with striped and camouflage flared skirts.
At the special men's venue on the 7th floor, NEWYOKER, which was founded in 1964 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary, will be proposing a modern version of Ivy League fashion under the theme of "2014 NEW Ivy League Studies." A red wool blazer (74,520 yen), exclusive to the Ginza store, and a striped blazer commemorating the 50th anniversary will be on sale. Archives will also be on display, and customers will be able to actually touch and see the jackets.
At Le PLAYCE on the 3rd floor women's floor, a look that combines the sensibility of the Miyuki tribe with a modern twist will be proposed. Kaon will be selling a lace dress and matching scrunchie set (90,300 yen), Muller of Yoshiokubo will be selling a contrasting dress (51,450 yen) and matching hair turban (8,400 yen), and Laula will be selling a mixed-material dress (44,100 yen), all exclusively at the Ginza store. Other brands like LUDLOW and triaa will also be releasing 1960s-inspired dresses exclusively at the Ginza store. On the 19th, a fashion show and a mini concert by Russian diva Ekaterina were held, as well as a talk show by Ginza magazine editor-in-chief Nakajima Toshiko. Nakajima commented, "Ginza may seem intimidating at first glance, but it's a place enjoyed by people of all ages who love new things and seek excitement. The coexistence of new and old is its charm, and I want Ginza magazine to embody that. I'm proud to be a 'Tokyo-originated' magazine, something that international magazines don't have." Regarding the theme for Ginza Mitsukoshi during GFW, he said, "Items from the 1920s to 1950s are making a comeback in the fall and winter, so I thought the revival of the Miyuki tribe was timely and interesting. I recommend keeping your clothes compact and adding accents with head accessories and clutch bags, as it's easy to style." GFW runs until the 31st. The store will host a talk show with Terry Ito on the 21st, and fashion shows on the 22nd and 29th.
