To celebrate its first anniversary, "TOKYO Kaihoku" (liberation zone), located on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building and opened last March, will host "un-gender@TOKYO Kaihoku by MIKIOSAKABE," an event focusing on the brand "MIKIOSAKABE" with a genderless theme, from March 5th to 18th.
In an era in which standards of beauty are diversifying, with men increasingly dressing in feminine clothing and women in more masculine attire, the event will propose a free-spirited approach to values unconstrained by gender and beauty that transcends gender differences, with the theme of "fashion that expresses human charm."
Incorporating elements of subcultures such as Akihabara's otaku and Harajuku's lolita, "MIKIOSAKABE" was one of the first brands to develop genderless collections. The event will showcase the full lineup of the 2014 Spring/Summer collection, as well as exclusive items from Isetan. Additionally, the brand's 2014 Autumn/Winter pre-season line will be available exclusively at Isetan. This marks the brand's first pre-season release.
In advance of the event, photographer Mori Eiki has unveiled a main visual expressing "genderlessness," featuring Takeru, the frontman of the five-member band SuG, as the model.
In addition to corsage accessories, the venue will also exhibit and sell a collaboration line with manga artist Nakamura Asumiko's work "Classmates," Nakamura's works, and Mori's photo books.
A talk event will be held on March 8th from 4:00 to 5:00 PM with designer Sakabe Mikio and "Mofu-chan" Fukushima Maiko. The talk will focus on the relationship between genderlessness and boys' love (commonly known as BL) in Japan, as well as art and subculture.
