Isetan Shinjuku Main Store Completes First Exterior Wall Repair in 35 Years. Energy-Saving Lighting Design Enhances Time and Seasons

Sep 18, 2020

Isetan Shinjuku has been gradually carrying out repairs to the exterior walls of its main building since May 7, 2019. All work was completed on September 25, and the exterior lighting design will also be revamped. The new lighting design, which reduces power consumption by approximately 50% and CO2 emissions by approximately 26 tons per year compared to the previous design, creates a sense of time change from sunset to late at night and the changing seasons, adding a touch of vitality and joy to the Shinjuku streetscape.

Completed in 1933, the main building of the Isetan Shinjuku store, made of stone and lavishly decorated with Art Deco elements, was designated a Tokyo Metropolitan Historic Building in 1996. Even today, it retains the charm of the early Showa period when it was first built.

Isetan Mitsukoshi Group's Sustainability Initiatives
Based on the perspective of the SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals), the Isetan Mitsukoshi Group aims for sustainable management that is driven by both resolving social issues through its business and improving corporate value. In order to continue serving as a "connector" between "customers around the world" seeking "prosperity" and "people, regions, times, and society," we will promote the following three key initiatives based on governance and communication.

Connecting a Sustainable Society and Times
In order to connect a sustainable society for the future, we will provide safe and secure products and services, and promote initiatives that lead to reducing environmental impact, including a low-carbon society and resource conservation. In fiscal 2018, we formulated the "Isetan Mitsukoshi Group 2030 Medium-Term Environmental Goals," setting climate change countermeasures as a company-wide goal and working to reduce total CO2 emissions. Note that the reduction targets use fiscal 2013 as the base year, just like the Paris Agreement, and have been set to exceed the country's international commitments.
