Rick Owens will be holding "Rick Owens, Temple of Love," the first retrospective of fashion designer Rick Owens' creative work in Paris, at the Palais Galliera, a fashion museum in Paris.
RIZZOLI RICK OWENS TEMPLE OF LOVE BOOK COVER, OWENSCORP
The exhibition will feature over 100 silhouettes, from Owens' early work when he began working in Los Angeles to his most recent collections. With a strong interest in spirituality and ritual, Owens's creations draw inspiration from a wide range of cultural contexts, from the literary works of author Joris-Karl Huysmans to contemporary art and classic films from the early 20th century. As artistic director, Rick Owens personally participated in the planning of the exhibition, working with the Palais Galliera's curatorial team to create a unique exhibition path that extends through the museum's exterior walls and gardens.
FAYE, LAS PALMAS AVE, HOLLYWOOD, SLAB FW01, GINO SULLIVAN
Born in California in 1961, Rick Owens began his career as a pattern cutter in Los Angeles and launched his own brand in 1992. Inspired by underground culture and the glamorous fashion of the 1930s, his work is known for its sophisticated construction. Inspired by the limited resources of his early career environment, Owens repurposed materials such as military bags, army blankets, and washed leather, transforming them into dresses and jackets. He favored black and muted colors, and a distinctive gray he named "Dust" became one of his signature colors.
MOLLY, FW15 SPHINX WOMEN'S, PALAIS DE TOKYO, PARIS, 5 MARCH 2015, OWENSCORP
Since moving to Paris in 2003, MOLLY has continued to present independent and provocative fashion shows, garnering attention for their socially charged expressions. In one show, he replaced models with a mostly black female step dance troupe, while in another, he exposed male models' genitals. Each show celebrates the strength of women. His stance on global crises is expressed through more sculptural pieces and vibrant colors.
TERRY-ANN, PARIS, 2002, PHOTOGRAPHED BY RICK OWENS
This exhibition explores the various facets of Owens' artistic roots, showcasing personal documents and video footage of his creative process, previously unseen installations, and works by Gustave Moreau, Joseph Beuys, and Steven Parrino. It also highlights the influence of his wife and collaborator, Michéle Lamy, through a recreation of the couple's California bedroom. His work extends beyond the museum, too. He covered the museum's exterior sculptures in sequin-embroidered fabric. Additionally, the Palais Galliera gardens feature 30 specially designed Brutalist-style cement sculptures, evocative of the artist's furniture collections. The gardens are also home to grapevines and plants native to California, a favorite of the artist.
RICK'S OFFICE WALL, PALAIS BOURBON, 2024, OWENSCORP
Unprecedented in scale and scope, the exhibition, "Rick Owens, Temple Of Love," presents a monumental meditation on love, beauty, and diversity. Silhouettes from the archives of one of the most iconic contemporary designers transform the museum into a temple dedicated to creativity.
