Former East German traffic light mascot Ampelmann's first street-level store opens on Cat Street

Apr 23, 2013

The first Japanese street-level store for the popular German character "AMPELMANN," "AMPELMANN Shop Tokyo," will open on the 24th along Shibuya's Cat Street.

The shop will stock over 400 Ampelmann merchandise. The store will collaborate with the German coffee brand "Dallmyar Coffee" and offer original products such as rusks, a German confectionery.

Ampelmann was the character featured on traffic lights in the former East Germany. After the reunification of East and West Germany, his role was destined to end, but a "Save Ampelmann!" movement led by Ampelmann lovers prevented him from disappearing. He has now been revived and is active throughout the streets of Berlin. He has also participated in various collaborations in Japan, including the 2011 All Nippon Airways campaign celebrating the 25th anniversary of international flights and the 2012 "Berlin State Museum Exhibition" at the Ueno National Museum of Western Art.
