"Put on some steteko and read a book" this Golden Week! Uniqlo and Tsutaya present 10 ways to spend Golden Week in Shibuya

Apr 29, 2013

UNIQLO and SHIBUYA TSUTAYA in front of Shibuya Station in Tokyo have collaborated to offer an event suggesting ways to spend Golden Week (GW), titled "STETECO&RELACO "VIRTUAL TRAVEL" BOOKSTORE: 10 PLAN TO ENJOY THE 3-DAY GW HOLIDAY," which runs until May 8th.

This year's Golden Week is predicted to be "cheap, close, and short" due to the weak yen, so this event is an initiative to suggest ways to spend the holiday using UNIQLO's relaxing pants, "STETECO" and "RELACO," which are being introduced this season, and books selected by SHIBUYA TSUTAYA.

On the 6th floor of SHIBUYA TSUTAYA, mannequins wearing STETECO&RELACO are displayed in 10 different situations, reading travel books, cookbooks, manga, and more. The book suggests suitable occasions for wearing the pants, promoting a lifestyle aimed at fashion-conscious people in their 20s who frequent Shibuya. During the campaign period, customers who purchase the book will receive a discount coupon for 100 yen off the purchase of Steteko & Liraco at two nearby Uniqlo stores, encouraging sales of both items. Additionally, staff on the same floor will be wearing Steteko & Liraco while serving customers. Steteko & Liraco are lightweight, below-the-knee pants that can be worn as loungewear, casual bottoms, or innerwear. They come in 200 different colors and patterns. Steteko began trial sales in 2011 and was fully launched in 2012. Responding to demand from women who were also buying Steteko, which was previously aimed at men, Liraco was launched for women this year. Liraco is a portmanteau of "relax" and "comfort." All items are priced at 990 yen. Natsuki Ito of Uniqlo's Global Communications Department explained the collection, "We've taken the traditional Japanese steteko and given it a modern twist, proposing a new style for spending the hot summer in comfort. We sell it worldwide and aim to promote traditional Japanese culture. The concept is similar to Uniqlo's UT T-shirt series, and we offer a wide variety of items so you can choose the one that best suits your taste and mood, just like choosing a T-shirt." Takahiro Yoshida, store manager of Shibuya Tsutaya, said, "This is the first time we've collaborated with a fashion brand like this. Since its founding, Tsutaya has defined itself as a 'hub for providing information on new lifestyles,' and we view books as a bookstore that offers lifestyle suggestions. I've had a personal interest in Uniqlo for some time, and I was looking for a new collaboration with them, so we approached them around October of last year and this project came to fruition. We came up with these 10 plans together with the Shibuya Tsutaya staff."
