The "Lady and the Unicorn" exhibition, from the collection of the Musée National de Cluny, will run from April 24th to July 15th at the National Art Center, Tokyo (Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo) and from July 27th to October 20th at the National Museum of Art, Osaka (Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture). This will be the first time that a series of six masterpiece tapestries has been exhibited in Japan.
The "Lady and the Unicorn" tapestry series is said to have been created around 1500 AD and is highly regarded for its artistic merit among medieval European tapestries. It has only been loaned outside France once, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States in 1974. This will be its second time exhibiting it outside France in approximately 40 years.
All six tapestries will be on display in the exhibition, making for an impressive display spanning a total length of 22 meters. Five of the tapestries, featuring vibrant millefleur patterns, represent the five human senses: touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight. The meaning of the remaining panel, "My Only Desire," remains a mystery, with various theories circulating, including love, intelligence, and marriage. In conjunction with the exhibition, original products based on the six tapestries, created in collaboration with artists from Japan and abroad, will be sold exclusively at Isetan Shinjuku (April 17-23) and Ginza Mitsukoshi (April 24-30). For this event, titled "ART TRICOLORE," Finnish design duo Ahonen Ramberg, François Alarie, Enamel, Lumix Design Studio, and Izuru Aminaka will create original cut-and-sew items, accessories, iPhone cases, and more. The world of "The Lady and the Unicorn" will also be recreated in the venue.
