The Shiseido Gallery in Ginza will host the group exhibition "Tsubaki-kai 2015: Beginner's Mind" from April 4 to May 24.
The Seventh Tsubaki-kai, whose works will be exhibited this time, was founded in 2013 by five artists: painter Genpei Akasegawa, photographer Naoya Hatakeyama, sculptor Rei Naito, and contemporary artists Zon Ito and Ryoko Aoki. In response to the need to reexamine beginner's mind in the wake of the earthquake recovery process, the group has chosen this as the subtitle for each exhibition. This expresses the "mindset of taking on new challenges at various stages of life," as described in Zeami's calligraphy.
The exhibition will also feature illustrated diaries published in magazines between 1987 and 1988 by Genpei Akasegawa, who passed away suddenly in October 2014. Akasegawa's works chronicle his daily experiences from his unique perspective, revealing his dual roles as both a writer and an illustrator. Meanwhile, Hatakeyama will exhibit a photograph of a giant boulder carried by a glacier, Naito will present his latest works from "Color Beginning" and "Hito," and Aoki will present small drawings he created spontaneously. Ito will present new embroidery pieces based on the wildlife survey he has been conducting in the Ginza area since last year. Also joining the Tsubaki-kai is Yasutake Shimaji, currently active with the Forsythe Company, led by dancer and choreographer William Forsythe, as a new member, replacing Akasegawa. He will perform an improvisational dance inspired by the exhibited works on April 25th at 7:15 PM. Furthermore, Ito will visit the gallery on May 17th for a gallery talk.
