Shiseido's exhibition of aspiring artists focuses on food paintings

Jan 9, 2015

The Shiseido Gallery will hold its 9th "shiseido art egg" exhibition, running from January 9th to March 29th.

"shiseido art egg" is a program for nurturing young artists, opening the gallery to artists selected from a wide public call for submissions. This year, 340 applications were submitted, and three works selected by the jury will be exhibited for 21 days each.

Kawauchi Rikako's solo exhibition, running from the 9th to February 1st, will feature paintings themed on "food." Food transforms the foreign substances we ingest into energy, shaping our bodies and minds. Kawauchi continues to depict the inseparable relationship between humans and food, making the most of the gallery's walls to express the presence of food.

Then, from February 6th to March 1st, sculptor Momoyo Iijima, who explores the role of family in the modern world, will exhibit her works on the theme of "family memories." One of the works, a house-shaped paraffin wax sculpture, features actual antique tableware encased within it. The exposed parts on the surface have been cut off, symbolizing modern society, where ties to land and blood have become weaker.

The final 21-day exhibition, starting on March 6th, will feature an installation by Tetsuro Kano. In his work, artificial objects such as ceramics and natural objects such as branches and fruit are freed from their original roles, becoming part of the new landscapes created by Kano. In this exhibition, birds will be released into the gallery, and their free movement will create an uncontrollable order.

On the second day of each exhibition, a gallery talk by the artist will be held. Furthermore, the winner of the Shiseido Art Egg Award will be announced on the website in late April.
