The theme for Roppongi Art Night 2013, a major all-night event immersing Roppongi in art, has been decided as "TRIP → Witness Today Become Tomorrow." This year, the event will run from 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2013, to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 24, 2013.
For the first time, an artistic director will be appointed, artist Katsuhiko Hibino. Based on the theme, Hibino and the other artists will create a diverse program of trips around Roppongi, embodying "short journeys through time and space," "the exhilaration of turning night into morning," and "feelings of traveling to a place beyond time and space." A one-night-only, extraordinary space will be created, treating various parts of Roppongi as "ports/terminals."
In addition, "Art Venets," collaborations between various artists, will appear in various locations around Roppongi, starting with Hibino's work that embodies his feelings for Tohoku. Focusing on the "neighborhood" and "community" of Roppongi, the event will develop programs born from ties with the local community and installations that make use of Roppongi's streets. It will also feature the "Roppongi Yorakukai," a gathering of artists and professionals from various fields.
Now in its fifth year (fourth time), Roppongi Art Night is an event that creates an extraordinary experience by dotting the streets of Roppongi with not only artworks but also design, music, video, performances, and more. Over 200 artists and groups have participated to date, and the event is garnering attention as a new art event in Tokyo. The 2012 event attracted a total of 700,000 visitors (total number of viewers across all programs).
