Sharing a spirit of constant innovation, with tradition, craftsmanship, and creativity at their core, the partnership between Gucci and HOSOO began in 2022. Since then, artisans from Gucci and HOSOO have worked closely together to develop new textiles for Gucci's iconic bags, resulting in the release of limited-edition handbags that embody the advanced craftsmanship and artistry of Nishijin weaving, one of Japan's most renowned traditional crafts.

In Chapters 1 and 2, released in December 2022 and June 2023, Gucci's iconic motifs are woven into several different textiles using various Nishijin-ori techniques to create different textures, resulting in the exquisite Gucci Bamboo 1947 and Gucci Diana bags. These bags have become unique collector's items, and several of them are housed in the Gucci Archives in Florence. The piece will also be exhibited as a symbol of Gucci's dialogue with the arts and culture of Japan and Kyoto at the "Gucci Cosmos" exhibition, which opens at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art on October 1st.

For the third chapter of the collaboration, a new textile has been developed to celebrate Gucci's 60th anniversary in Japan, and a limited-edition handbag has been created under the direction of Creative Director Sabato de Sarno. The new textile features an original design combining the GG pattern and floral print motifs, using HOSOO's signature "Petals" technique, which weaves the beauty of overlapping flower petals in a three-dimensional manner. The delicate lines of the flowers and dragonflies depicted in the Flora print are reproduced using the highly skilled artisanal technique known as "hatsuriki," and by weaving silver foil into the multi-layered structure, the fabric's elegant shine changes depending on the angle, resulting in a fabric of elegance and depth.

There are nine limited-edition handbags in total. The Gucci Bamboo 1947 small, Gucci Diana small and mini, and Gucci Jackie are each available in Gucci's new signature colors, Gucci Rosso Ancora (a deep red) and green, with matching textile and leather trim and light gold-tone hardware. Additionally, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 mini is available in a precious version featuring Gucci Rosso Ancora textile and lizard leather trim.

About this project, Masataka Hosoo, the 12th generation Creative Director of HOSOO, said, "In this collaboration, we are constantly facing the challenge of how to resonate with the traditions of Gucci while also refining the techniques and aesthetics that we have inherited. This time, we have made use of Nishijin's heritage of foil and weaving techniques, while incorporating colors that are appropriate for the transition from autumn to the festive season, to express the depth of vintage pieces."

HOSOO
Hosoo was founded in 1688 in Nishijin, Kyoto, as a weaver purveyor to major temples. Nishijin-ori, a Kyoto pre-dyed fabric, has been cultivated for 1,200 years, enjoying overwhelming support from aristocrats, the samurai class, and wealthy townspeople. Today, Hosoo inherits the traditional Nishijin-ori techniques of obi sashes and kimonos, while incorporating innovative techniques and a timeless design sensibility to create one-of-a-kind textiles and distribute them to luxury markets both domestically and internationally.
