Gucci celebrates its 60th anniversary in Japan with an exhibition at Gucci Ginza featuring 60 bamboo handle bags created by Japanese artists.

Event Date:2024.08.02-09.23
Jul 10, 2024
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the official introduction of Gucci products to Japan in 1964, and Gucci is planning a variety of projects and events in Japan. One of these is a special collaboration between traditional Japanese craftsmen and contemporary artists to create works using vintage Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbags. This unprecedented project involves unearthing and upcycling vintage bags, and the resulting 60 Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbags will be exhibited at the Gucci Ginza Gallery.

The origins of the Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbag also have a connection to Japan. In post-war Italy, when high-quality materials were difficult to come by, founder Guccio Gucci and Gucci artisans in Florence crafted Japanese bamboo into bag handles. The bamboo-handle bag, created in 1947, has become an instantly recognizable Gucci icon and remains a symbol of the brand's innovators in craftsmanship and luxury. The project primarily features Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbags manufactured and sold in the 1980s and 1990s. Gucci's dedicated archivists carefully selected 60 vintage bags that have retained their elegant beauty over time. Each bag will be given new life by metal engraver and Living National Treasure Katsura Morihito, his apprentice Ai Naoko, lacquer artist Tokeshi Ai, ceramic artist Nakazato Hirotsune, photographer Moriyama Daido, and painters Yaegashi Yui and Yokoyama Nami. Traditional craftsmen and contemporary artists will use their own craftsmanship and creativity to create one-of-a-kind Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbags, engaging with the trajectory of Gucci's artisans' skills and the rich history of the bags. The 60 completed Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbags will be on public display and available for sale as art pieces at the "Bamboo 1947: Then and Now - Bamboo Meets Japanese Crafts and Contemporary Art" exhibition, which will run from August 2 to September 23 at the Gucci Ginza Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo.
