
Actor Dustin Hoffman was born on August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, USA.
Born to film-loving parents, his first name was chosen after silent star Dustin Farnum. He began learning piano at around age six and aspired to become a pianist as a child. He attended a Los Angeles conservatory and majored in music at university, but to avoid failing, he enrolled in drama and decided to pursue acting. He graduated from the conservatory in 1958 and made his Broadway debut in 1961.
After a period of unemployment, he studied at a drama school in New York and made his film debut in 1967. That same year, he was chosen for the lead role in the film "The Graduate," for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, instantly making him a star. He continued to receive nominations for "Midnight Cowboy" in 1969 and "Lenny Bruce" in 1974, finally winning the Oscar for Best Actor in 1979 for "Kramer vs. Kramer." His flawless acting cemented his place in Hollywood, earning him another Oscar for Best Actor in 1988 for "Rain Man." In recent years, he has often played supporting roles.
In 2012, he made his directorial debut with "Quartet!," which received high praise at the Toronto International Film Festival. He visited Japan for the film's Japan premiere, his first in 21 years, and has appeared on numerous television programs.
In his personal life, he married in 1969, had a daughter, but divorced. He remarried Lisa Hoffman in 1980, and the couple have four children. On the 6th of this month, he announced that he had been undergoing cancer treatment. While details of his condition have not been disclosed, the treatment was reportedly successful.
