Spiral to host "Hans Wegner Chairs" exhibition featuring Scandinavian design master

Aug 8, 2013

A solo exhibition of Hans Wegner, one of Denmark's most renowned furniture designers, "Hans Wegner Chairs Selected by Shimazaki Makoto and Oda Kenji," will be held at Spiral Garden from September 27th to October 14th. This exhibition, curated by Shimazaki Makoto, a leading scholar of Scandinavian design who was a close friend of Wegner's during his lifetime, and chair researcher Oda Kenji, examines Wegner's craftsmanship from three perspectives: "use," "view," and "buy." The exhibition will showcase a variety of historically significant pieces, including classic pieces still in production, chairs no longer in production, and chairs that were only prototypes. Valuable materials such as wooden parts, miniatures, and models of Wegner's own homes will also be on display. During the exhibition, Wegner's chairs, Scandinavian design chairs, miscellaneous goods, and original merchandise will be available for purchase. Wegner, who is said to have designed more than 500 chairs in his lifetime, was born in 1914. He began his apprenticeship under a furniture craftsman at age 14 and earned his master's degree at age 17. He began studying design at the School of Arts and Crafts in 1936. After graduating, he worked for Arne Jacobsen's office, where he was involved in the furniture design of Aarhus City Hall in Denmark. In 1984, he was knighted by the Queen of Denmark. In 1995, the Wegner Museum opened in his hometown of Tønder on the southern Jutland peninsula. Wegner passed away in 2007 at the age of 92. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of his birth. Wegner's many timeless masterpieces include the "Chinese Chair," created in 1943 as an improvement on a chair made during the Ming Dynasty in China; the "Y Chair," which has sold more than 500,000 chairs worldwide; and the "Round Chair" (commonly known as the "Chair"), nicknamed "the chair of chairs."
