On the 23rd, LOEWE launched its collaborative collection with JUNYA WATANABE COMME des GARÇONS, "Loewe and Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons," at DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA in Tokyo's Ginza district, making it the world's first. The collection is displayed inside the store in a special installation of stacked black rubber flamenco chairs. The lineup includes leather jackets and skirts, leather-trimmed denim jackets, and denim pants, as well as bags, pouches, wallets, and other items in the same design style. The Junya Watanabe COMME des GARÇONS corner across from the installation is offering an advance sale of the "Amazona" tweed bag, a collaboration item with LOEWE that was unveiled at the show.
Loewe Japan President and CEO Takafumi Mizuguchi attended the launch party. "I'm overwhelmed (that the launch has finally happened). We wanted to collaborate with a brand that is in a completely different position from us at Loewe. We're aiming for an unexpected collaboration. We both share a common passion for craftsmanship. I think Watanabe's punkish style created a great contrast with Loewe's traditional atmosphere. It was a fun job," said Mizuguchi.
A limited-time event is scheduled to run for one week from September 18th at The Stage on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku. "The space will be special, recreating the atmosphere of the venue where we held our fashion show at the Spanish Embassy in May. At the embassy, we've created a contrast by affixing photos of the interiors of Casa Pilatos and Casa Guardiola in Seville, Spain, to the modern white space. We also plan to display items at the event using a flamenco chair installation."
The black installation is another element of the contrast. "Black is a symbol of nobility in Spain. The unique texture of rubber, combined with the Spanish essence of black and flamenco, creates a contrast." The collaborative collection will then be fully launched at select Loewe stores from September 25th. It will be sold at 13 stores in Japan (including the Loewe online boutique) and 33 stores worldwide.
On the day, Mizuguchi apparently enjoyed shopping at Dover Ginza, where he reportedly purchased a Comme des Garçons Junya Watanabe Man shirt.
