For Ferragamo's Fall/Winter 2024 collection, Maximilian Davis explores the 1920s through his own lens, distilling the essence of its free-spirited identity. The collection condenses iconic visual codes—short hemlines, flowing fabrics, dropped waists, and relaxed cuts—that broke free from social conventions, further refining and refining them to reflect the self-expression of the 1920s, which combined a dual sensibility with the 19th and 20th centuries.

Alongside lacquered organza dresses, ultra-feminine sheerness, and feather and sequin embroidery, the wardrobes of actresses of the time, such as Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo, who favored masculine silhouettes, were reflected in broad shoulders, heavy wools, and supple leathers. In tailoring, sharp, sculptural lapels evoked a Surrealist spirit, and combined with distorted proportions, they created striking finishes reminiscent of rayograph portraits. Blanket capes, often found in the Ferragamo archives, are one of the iconic 1920s items used for protection.

This idea of "protection" is one of the themes of this collection, inspired by the uniforms of the time as well as practical fisherman's workwear, such as thigh-high waders and leather outerwear, paired with flowing drapes. The finest wool cashmere and unlined leather, which creates an effortlessly delicate look, each express a different level of softness, giving the collection a fetishistic charm.

In footwear, period-defining details such as sweetheart-shaped satin pumps, elegant T-strap stiletto heels and strappy sandals from the archives make a subtle yet striking statement.

In the bag department, seasonal variations on the iconic "Hug" bag are available in feather, grained calfskin, and the new Ferragamo Monogram style. The special model, which resembles mermaid scales and is made by hand from 950 laminated leather sequins over a 19-hour process, showcases Ferragamo's exceptional craftsmanship. The Fiamma bag is available in new sizes and with animated shadows that reflect the collection's theme, and a new handbag with a softer shape is also introduced, featuring a Gancini closure, a reference to the lily, a symbol of Ferragamo's hometown of Florence.

In the 1920s, clothing represented a means of celebrating freedom. And this expression of freedom resonates with me, my estate, and Ferragamo.
In the 1920s, people formed communities through speakeasies (bars that served alcohol secretly during Prohibition) as a place to exchange opinions about the society around them. To avoid danger, people wore capes, hiding their clothing until they were safe.

"I'm always rethinking things. I love looking back at history and redefining the icons and trends of that era in a cleaner, more modern way."
