The third "Omotesando Rice Festival," an event offering a variety of rice experiences, will be held in Omotesando, Tokyo, on June 7th. Rice became a staple food on Japanese dining tables after the war. Around 1975, numerous brand names, including "Koshihikari," were born. Now, a movement to change the way people approach rice is taking place across the country, from rice shops to consumers. The festival is positioning this as the "third wave of rice" and proposing "new ways to enjoy rice" from Omotesando, once a rice-growing region but now known as a trendsetting center both domestically and internationally. This third installment, themed on the "Evolution of Rice," will feature talks, a market, food events, workshops, and more. At the market, the festival's food production team, "honshoku," has collaborated with the rice master group "Tokyo Rice Ward" to commercialize an original rice blend. Rice masters will create rice blends that evoke images of words such as "forest" and "happy time."
Key players in the rice industry will gather at "Rice Talk!", with participants including Hobonichi Itoi Shimbun, which released the "Small Rice Field Kit," Torao, a group of young farmers from Akita, and Tokyo Gohan-ku. You can enjoy free talks by organizations that are revolutionizing the rice industry. Other planned workshops include a rice sensory test conducted by the Japan Grain Inspection Association, and a workshop to find your favorite pickled plum rice ball conducted by the Onigiri Association, which also made an appearance at the Milan Expo. There are also plans for people to experience rice from a variety of different angles.
