YAYOI KUSAMA "PUMPKIN" 339/380
(Screen print, 14.0 x 20.0 cm, 2005)
"Mukai Shuji x Shimizu Rokubei" Exhibition
Mukai Shuji, who fills his work with meaningless symbols and attempts to transform all values, and Shimizu Rokubei, who studied architecture based on Kyoto tradition and creates contemporary sculptures by combining clay slabs. Through processes such as "carving," "painting," and "layering," the two artists have created new added value through collaborative works that will be exhibited as a special project in the "Mukai Shimizu-an" space within the venue.

Collaborative Work by Mukai Shuji and Shimizu Rokubei

Mukai Shuji
Born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture in 1940. An artist who designs spaces.
In 2013, he performed an installation performance to mark the opening of the "Gutai Retrospective" at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
In December 2016, he created the symbolic column installation "Heaven, Earth, Sky" under the direction of architect Peter Marino for the Louis Vuitton Soho store that opened in New York. The essence of Mukai's art lies in attempting to transform all values by filling space with meaningless symbols.

Shimizu Rokubei
The eighth generation Rokubei was born in Kyoto in 1954 as the eldest son of the seventh generation.
After graduating from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University in 1979, he studied potter's wheel at the Kyoto Prefectural Pottery Vocational Training School and glazing at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Testing Institute, before embarking on a full-time ceramic career. He won the Grand Prix at the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition in 1983, which marked his de facto debut. He creates his pieces by precisely cutting and joining clay slabs according to blueprints, but he also intentionally incorporates distortion and settling caused by firing into his designs by cutting slits in the vessel to manipulate its strength or by utilizing the force of gravity.
In 2000, he succeeded the name of the eighth generation, and has since focused on creating sculptural vessels.
In 2003, he became a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design, where he continues to mentor the next generation of ceramic artists while continuing his energetic creative work.
He is one of the leading figures in contemporary ceramics, having received the 2004 Japan Ceramic Association Award in 2005.

ICCO Yoshimura "Shepherd's purse I"
(Acrylic, 91.0 x 91.0 cm)

ICCO Yoshimura
Born in Kyoto in 1987, ICCO Yoshimura spent his time mainly in the Kansai region until high school. He attended art and craft classes as a child and has fond memories of it ever since, teaching himself to draw.
As his parents ran a French restaurant, he often spent time in the kitchen or on the floor from the time he was old enough to remember, and he is particularly good at drawing wine bottles and tableware. "Sherpherd's purse" is based on the motif of livestock, which are used as food for the artist. Feeling that the phrase "Itadakimasu" (thank you for the meal) is not being used very often anymore, this painting is a response to the issue of food waste. "Blessed" is based on the motif of the dining table we gather around every day. It expresses the small everyday joys of eating with family and friends.

● Live painting by ICCO Yoshimura
Sunday, July 12th, from 1pm (planned)
