Cai Guo-Qiang, the world-renowned contemporary artist known as the "artist of explosions," will hold his first large-scale solo exhibition in Japan in seven years, "Cai Guo-Qiang: Return," from July 11th to October 18th at the Yokohama Museum of Art in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Cai Guo-Qiang is known for his style of exploding gunpowder to fix images onto canvas or Japanese paper, earning him the nickname "artist of explosions." He is one of the most active artists in the contemporary art world, having directed the fireworks display as the visual effects artistic director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
For this exhibition, he has explored the landscapes of Yokohama and the beauty of Japan, and created "gunpowder drawings" in the Grand Gallery of the Yokohama Museum of Art that evoke large-scale explosions. The process of the explosion will be shown at the venue as a documentary film produced in collaboration with the Katsura Hidefumi Laboratory (geidaiRAM) of the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts, whose campus is located in Yokohama.
Also being shown in Japan for the first time will be the masterpiece "Kabe-Suki," a life-size work measuring approximately 40 meters depicting a pack of 99 wolves.
