"The Science of Movement," directed by creative director and filmmaker Seiichi Hishikawa, will run from June 19 to September 27 at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo Midtown Garden.
The theme of the exhibition is "motion." Motion design techniques, which have brought "motion" to expression, support our daily lives in areas such as vehicle control systems, map applications, and communications technology. Engineering techniques and cutting-edge technologies enable dynamic depictions in products, graphics, and video, creating rich, emotional expressions. Various "moving tools" and their mechanisms are the result of continuous experimentation by designers and engineers.
The exhibition aims to allow visitors to experience, observe, understand, and experience the expressive power of "motion." It will also feature works by world-renowned media artists Jimoun and Nils Voelker, shown in Japan for the first time, as well as a large-scale new work from Kuwakubo Ryota's "LOST" series and a new, experiential piece by Euclid (Masahiko Sato and Takashi Kiriyama) that connects the brain and body. Other exhibits include "movement-themed" works, such as moving objects by Suzuki Taro and others, an installation in which AI paints pictures, and rotating animations. Mercedes-Benz Japan will exhibit a replica of the world's first gasoline-powered car, produced in 1885, and a test drive event is also planned. Furthermore, Hishikawa Seiichi, who is directing the exhibition, hopes that "by revealing the production process, including how the car is made and how it works, rather than simply allowing visitors to appreciate the artworks, we hope to inspire visitors with the idea that 'I could do that too,' or 'I'll try it myself.'" Drawing and Manual, led by Hishikawa, has created animations that unravel the principles of each piece's movement. This should encourage visitors to reconsider the relationship between the development of science and technology and design.
