Event Date:2020.07.11-07.28
Jul 7, 2020
Starting in July 11, ART UP, located on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Men's Building in Men's Creators, will host "BETWEEN LAYERS," an exhibition of works by LA-based creator IWANAMI TOMOYUKI, active on the global stage. The exhibition will run until July 28th.

Born in New York, USA, IWANAMI spent his high school and college years in Tokyo. He now divides his time between Los Angeles and New York, working on a wide range of creative projects. Raised as a Japanese-American, he aspires to serve as a bridge between Japan and the United States, showcasing works incorporating traditional Japanese crafts and techniques while promoting Japanese culture overseas.

One of his signature works, "Surfboard," is an art piece that combines a California-inspired item with traditional Japanese materials and techniques. While surfboards are typically manufactured through a process known as glassing, which involves layering fiberglass and resin, his work is characterized by its masterful fusion of techniques and materials that, at first glance, might not seem associated with surfboards, such as applying multiple layers of resin and sandwiching gold leaf or rose flowers between pieces.

This exhibition will feature "surfboard" works crafted with traditional Japanese materials and techniques, such as charred cedar planks, gold lacquer, and washi paper. We hope you will enjoy these works, which showcase the beauty of both Japanese and American cultures and are born from unconventional creativity.
