The "Third Kyoto" exhibition will be held, featuring the origins of the "Ming typeface" and the woodblock prints of the Buddhist sutras.

Jun 29, 2015

"The Third Kyoto," a project showcasing Kyoto's charms from various perspectives, will hold an exhibition titled "The Third Kyoto -1678/TODAY-" from July 12th to 20th at BOOK AND SONS, a secondhand bookstore specializing in typography in Tokyo's Meguro Ward. The "Issaikyō" is a Buddhist encyclopedia that covers all aspects of society, including Buddhist thought, astronomy, humanities, medicine, pharmacology, and humanity. The woodblocks used to print the text are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and approximately 60,000 of them are currently preserved at Kyoto's Hozō-in Temple, which was established by Zen Master Tetsugen Dokō as a printing and printing center. The exhibition will focus on the Issaikyō woodblocks, which are believed to be the origin of the Ming typeface, originally created as a typeface for letterpress printing using woodblocks and movable type. Photographs and videos will also be on display. In addition, there will be copies of "The Third Kyoto Original Mincho Font" distributed, and the previously published book "A PRIVATE KYOTO TRAVELOGUE" will be on sale.
