Ferragamo exhibition at Nijo Castle in Kyoto

Apr 16, 2015

Salvatore Ferragamo will hold the "Salvatore Ferragamo Jewels & Creations Shoes Exhibition" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Florence and Kyoto. The exhibition will take place at Nijo Castle in Kyoto from April 16th to 22nd.

Ferragamo has created numerous pieces inspired by Japanese history and culture. The "Kimo Sandal," released in 1951, symbolizes the relationship between the two countries. This piece pays homage to Japanese women's tabi socks, creating an innovative shoe that combines sandals and socks.

A canvas modeled after the frescoes of the brand's headquarters, Palazzo Spini Feroni, has been installed within the exhibition, creating a space where visitors can experience the brand's relationship with Japan. Among the shoes on display, particularly noteworthy are the "Kimo Sandal" and other archival pieces designed by Salvatore Ferragamo himself. This special exhibition features pieces from the Ferragamo Museum collection, including the "Maharani" sandal, made for the Queen of Cooch Behar in 1938, the "High Heel Sandal," inspired by Renaissance-era wooden platform heels, and the "Damigera," designed for Italian actress Sophia Loren in 1957. The exhibition also features a variety of the brand's works, including limited-edition items created specifically for the event and limited-edition reproductions of archive shoes. Among these is the "Miniature Preziose," an 18-karat gold pendant featuring iconic shoes. This piece faithfully recreates the shapes of Marilyn Monroe's "Red" and "Honey" and singer Judy Garland's "Rainbow." An event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the sister city relationship will be held on April 15th. The brand held a fashion show for its 2015-2016 Autumn/Winter collection at Shogunzuka Seiryuden, showcasing a selection of its 2016 Pre-Spring collection. Actress and TV personality Mori Hikari appeared at the venue wearing a limited-edition dress commemorating the 50th anniversary. Also at the event, Ferragamo Group President Ferruccio Ferragamo said, "My father, Salvatore, loved Japan, and created the Kimo sandal based on inspiration from Japan. For us, this place is home, so to speak." Additionally, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sister city partnership, the brand has collaborated with Kyoto textile shop Omiya. They plan to release limited-edition bags, shoes, and dresses made with the "triaxial weave" silk fabric.
