Canada Goose Fall/Winter 2023 Campaign Photographed by Annie Leibovitz Captures the Strength and Individuality of Women

Oct 9, 2023
Canada Goose teamed up with Annie Leibovitz to travel to the majestic landscape of New Mexico, the setting for the brand's latest campaign, to capture a story that takes us on an adventure that brings out the strength and individuality of women.

The "Live in the Open" campaign features three women from different fields, highlighting shining women in film, entertainment and sport. The three muses, actress, musician, playwright, and composer Sheila Atim, wildlife filmmaker and photographer Sophie Darlington, and Olympic athlete and ice hockey goalkeeper Kimberly Newell, were captured in their natural habitats in New Mexico.

Georgia O'Keeffe, one of modern history's most accomplished artists and pioneers, was also inspired by this land. Known for her nature-inspired paintings, New Mexico was where she felt most at home and where she spent her life, and she had a deep connection to the land and nature.

Featuring Leibovitz's signature lighting, dramatic atmosphere, and narrative visuals, the "Live in the Open" campaign brings to life three muses as powerful as the vast lands O'Keeffe once visited. Styling the women in this season's Canada Goose hero styles paired with their beloved wardrobes, the campaign vividly captures their individual personalities and unwavering connection to nature through Leibovitz's signature portrait style.

Annie Leibovitz
Leibovitz previously shot Canada Goose's Fall/Winter 2022 campaign. Having previously traveled to New Mexico to photograph Georgia O'Keeffe's home, this was a familiar location for the photographer, marking her second collaboration.

"I love these women and their stories. We were all captivated by the power of the New Mexico landscape. It was so inspiring to meet them in such a beautiful natural setting."

Sheila Atim (Actor/Musician/Playwright/Composer)
Sheila Atim has built a career as an actor/musician/playwright/composer, earning accolades for her work on stage and film, including a BAFTA, Cannes Film Festival, and Olivier Award. Her notable credits include "The Underground Railroad," "The Woman King," and "Bruised."

"Understanding the gravity and power of the Earth has given me a deep respect for forces greater than myself. Sometimes I feel lost, but maybe my actions can inspire others."
- Sheila Atim

Sophie Darlington (Wildlife Filmmaker/Photographer)
BAFTA- and multi-award-winning film and cinematographer Sophie Darlington has been creating wildlife feature films and television series for over 30 years. Having studied with eight-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Hugo van Roerick in Tanzania, she continues to carry on his legacy, not only in filmmaking but also through teaching, speaking and other activities, promoting diversity in wildlife filmmaking.

"Thirty years ago, when I started, you could count the number of female wildlife photographers on one hand. Now, so many people see me and other female photographers in action. I never thought I'd be the one blazing a trail. And now, I believe in the philosophy of 'See Her to be her.' Representation is so important."
- Sophie Darlington

Kimberly Newell (Olympic Ice Hockey Team Goalie)
Kimberly Barry Newell is a goalkeeper for the Olympic ice hockey team. He was scouted from Wall Street in 2018 and played for China's first professional ice hockey team. He will represent China at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where he led the team to a record-breaking two wins. He is currently based in Canada and is dedicated to supporting female athletes to reach their full potential through Empower Hockey, a women-focused ice hockey player development school.

"I had to make the very difficult decision to step away from ice hockey right after graduating from college. I returned, played professionally, and competed in the Olympics, never expecting to represent my country. After the Olympics, so many young women in China reached out to me, saying, 'I'd never watched hockey before, but I was so inspired.'"
- Kimberly Newell
