Jaeger-LeCoultre's Polaris line, designed for everyday adventures, introduces a two-tone chronograph

Sep 3, 2023
In 2018, Jaeger-LeCoultre revived the historic Polaris name and redefined it as a modern, sporty yet chic wristwatch for an all-new line of timepieces conceived for everyday adventures. In 2023, the Polaris Chronograph will evolve with two signature dials showcasing the Manufacture's craftsmanship.

Luxurious lacquer adds a new dimension to the sporty dial
Framed within the modern, simple lines of the case, the two dials of the new Polaris Chronograph are bold and striking thanks to their luxurious lacquered surfaces. One is dressed in deep blue, embodying the elegance characteristic of Polaris, while the other exudes sportiness in warm grey, a color never before seen by Jaeger-LeCoultre.

The complex dial comprises a central disc, a middle ring with hour markers, and an outer ring engraved with a tachymeter scale. Both the central disc and the hour ring are lacquered in a gradual transition from light to dark, giving the dial visual depth. The lacquering of these two dial components is a time-consuming and precise artisanal process, as each individual layer is applied by hand. A clear varnish is applied first, followed by layers of color.

The challenge here is to control both the shade and the gradient so that the two sections match. Thirty-five coats of translucent lacquer are then applied, adding depth and richness to the color. The process is completed by polishing the components to a bright, mirror-like finish.

The dial layout of the new Polaris Chronograph is timeless and intuitively legible. The central chronograph seconds hand ensures precise reading of key measurements. Balanced with the 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, the subdial at 9 o'clock (a notable change from the previous model) brings the seconds display to life. The circular grain of these subdials contrasts with the high gloss of the lacquered surface and the opaline finish of the outer ring.

Orange accents draw the eye to the important indications and add dynamism to the overall composition. Skeletonized hands enhance the legibility of the indications, and in keeping with the contemporary Polaris design codes, bold trapezoidal indexes harmonize with the delicate details of the chronograph displays. A luminous coating on the indexes, numerals, and hand tips improves readability in all lighting conditions – an essential feature in a sports watch.

Embracing a Legacy of Watchmaking Excellence
The sapphire crystal case back reveals the automatic Caliber 761 movement, the epitome of Jaeger-LeCoultre's approach to watchmaking, combining high performance with mechanical elegance. This fully integrated chronograph movement with two barrels is equipped with a column-wheel chronograph mechanism with a vertical clutch and offers a 65-hour power reserve.

Delicate finishes include blued screws, Côtes de Genève on the baseplate, and the signature openworked rotor adorned with a "JL" motif.
The movement is designed, produced, finished, and assembled within the Manufacture in Le Sentier, in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.

Where elegance meets adventure
Skillfully combining the robust and practical functionality of a sports watch with the elegant design unique to Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Polaris family pays homage to Jaeger-LeCoultre's iconic dive watches of the 1960s, capturing their sporting spirit and reinterpreting their vintage appeal with elegant, confident modern style.

Versatile enough to serve as both a casual and elegant everyday timepiece and a high-performance sports watch, the Polaris Chronograph is designed for maximum comfort. The harmonious and extremely wearable 42mm steel case features Polaris' key design codes: clean lines, sharply curved lugs, a slim bezel, sapphire crystal, and an eye-catching combination of satin-brushed and polished finishes.

Identifying the 1960s model that inspired the modern Polaris line, the oversized crown and robust pushers have been redesigned for easier grip and use.
