The Moncler Gamme Bleu Spring/Summer 2018 collection, overseen by Thom Browne, was unveiled in Milan on June 18th. The venue was amidst pure white snow, pine trees, palm trees, and deck chairs. The theme for this season was "The Flowing Season." All looks were layered in two parts, one made of down and the other made of other materials. When the down garments were removed, the items underneath all had the same design, revealing the secrets of snow and beach. The first look featured a white patent leather striped down jacket and down Bermuda shorts. The outerwear, including the gray tailored suit, chester coat, and trench coat, was all oversized and featured a large zipper on the back. The pants had a center zipper, making them suitable for serious snowy mountain wear. The materials, primarily cashmere and fine wool, were used for technical functionality, a testament to Moncler's pride and joy. The spring/summer items, which share the same design, are made up of classic materials such as cotton poplin, cotton gabardine, cavalry twill, and seersucker, combined with traditional pieces that are characteristic of Thom Browne. Italian sartorial techniques are presented in three groupings: gray and white, a red, white, and blue tricolor of madras and gingham check, and black tie formal wear. The sailor bag, made from the same material as the outerwear that appeared in the downwear scene, is replaced by a down-filled beach mat with the same pattern, and snow (moon) boots are replaced by beach sandals. Perhaps this trans-seasonal collection is a nod to the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, where the luxury men's market has reportedly been booming in recent years.
