The music video for "Passion" by Kyoto-based musician Hara Marihiko, who is active both in Japan and abroad in a wide range of fields from contemporary art and performing arts, installations, to film music, has been released. The music video features actor and dancer Moriyama Mirai and was shot on location at Kenninji Ryosokuin Temple in Kyoto, which is normally closed to the public. The title track will be included on his latest album, "PASSION," due for release on June 5th.
Mirai Moriyama, a friend of Hara's through his work on video works and installations, including the stage production "VESSEL" by sculptor Kohei Nawa and choreographer Damien Jalet, is not only involved in this work, but also in a wide range of other areas, from choreography creation to direction and concept ideas.
Comment from Marihiko Hara on the music video "PASSION"
When I heard the idea for the "Okina" (old man), I immediately recalled the Sanbaso (traditional Japanese dance) I saw at Tanzan Shrine in Nara Prefecture. It was performed on an outdoor stage with the mountains as its backdrop, and the sound of the accompaniment echoed through the mountains. The old man is said to be associated with bountiful harvests and national peace, yet he is shrouded in mystery. The situation rapidly changed on the April shoot day. At Kenninji Ryosokuin, adjacent to a quiet town, the frightened human played by Mirai eventually transforms into the old man, slowly moving forward, sometimes collapsing. Watching this, I once again considered the title "PASSION." I chose this word, which can be translated as "passion" or "suffering," to express my determination to embrace all the happiness and hardship that may come my way. Initially, this determination was personal, but its meaning has changed with the state of the world. Mirai and choreographer Yamamoto have picked up on the title's changing meaning and expressed it in a new way. I believe this video work is a response to the world today.
