Haute couture is ephemeral. It is a special tempo that reflects the process and excellence inherent in its creation. Distant times bring memory and imagination to life through two movements. Haute couture evolves in a sacred rhythm where the past meets the beat of the present. There are no paper patterns in the atelier; sketched forms are transformed into dresses, as engraved images, celebrating the body's most distinctive features.

For her Fall/Winter 2023-2024 Haute Couture collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri explored her own ideas, perfectly elevating quintessential sartorial elements such as tunics, peplums, capes and stoles. This return to sacred origins led to an encounter with artist Marta Roberti, whose work transformed the runway into an art gallery.

"I studied how goddesses have been depicted throughout the history of painting. Goddesses and animals are almost always associated with each other. I started by imitating their poses and movements with my own body, embodying the characteristics of the goddesses and creating my own goddess statue," she says. Inspired by Marta Roberti's words and approach to portraying the goddess, Women's Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri created a poetic expression of haute couture, fusing dress and body.

Models walked sacred steps, following in the footsteps of goddesses who have guided the world from past to present. Vertical silhouettes, flat shoes, and colors of white, beige, silver, and pale gold were used. Architecturally tailored jackets and coats with creases under the chest recalled Classical statues and the fluting of columns.

Embroideries are lavishly adorned with pearls, a symbol of purity, woven into silver thread for an iridescent sheen. Long skirts and dresses feature lustrous textures that have made a comeback since the 1960s. Wool and cashmere take centre stage, while embroidery on capes reminiscent of saintly garments punctuates various looks. Pleats on the sleeves of masculine jackets also play an important role.

By perpetuating the divinity of goddesses and reinterpreting ancient symbols of creation, the show becomes a contemporary ritual, showcasing the strength and fragility of femininity that sustains the communities we form. The collection evokes the past while transporting us to a vision of the future with delicacy and essential attention to detail.
