On June 24th, Abe Chitose's sacai presented its Spring/Summer 2018 men's and Pre-Spring 2018 women's collections at the Music Academy City in Paris's Villette district. While many pieces were inspired by workwear, military, and sportswear, as exemplified by the uniform lettering printed on the T-shirts, the collection's complexity and breadth go beyond mere description. The abstract word combination "Statis as to vector. All in due course" incorporated typography by conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner into textiles, while other iconic motifs, such as heart and plaid patterns reminiscent of American night camouflage, Madras-style checks, and painted checks, graced the entire collection.
Pleated dresses with bomber details, jackets and blousons with western fringe, and coats made from shirt material, along with the silhouettes and combinations of items, create a comfortable sense of déjà vu yet a sense of strangeness. This is largely due to the creations that Abe Chitose says are true to her words: "I take the familiar rules of clothing into account, but change their context, encouraging the viewer to write their own story, giving them the freedom to find their own connection and meaning." This is a concept that has been consistent from the beginning, but it always gives the collection a fresh sparkle.
