The "darkness" of Robert Coutras, depicted in watercolors, commemorating his 30th death [Recommended Book from Keibunsha Ichijoji Store]

Feb 25, 2015

Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the one book you should read right now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Wednesday, we will introduce recommended books from Keibunsha Ichijoji (10 Ichijoji Horadono-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto), a Kyoto-based shop specializing in books and all things related to books. This time, we have selected the latest collection of works by Robert Coutras, whose first retrospective in Japan is currently being held at the Shoto Museum of Art in Shibuya, Tokyo (until March 15th).

■ "Robert Coutras Collection: My Ancestors" by Mariko Kishi and Moria

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Robert Coutras, a painter born in Montparnasse, Paris in 1930 who was called the modern-day Maurice Utrillo.

After refusing to accept the style requested by his gallery, Coutras devoted himself solely to creating hand-sized card illustrations called "Cartes." He named the paintings he continued to make every night on various subjects "My Nights."

Just as he called his series of cults, Coutras named his portraits of people and animals, which he painted in his own solitude and anxiety, "My Ancestors." This book contains only those works painted in gouache, an introspective and spiritual collection that will resonate deeply with the viewer.
