Introducing China's new fashion wave and noteworthy young designer brands [EDITOR'S BLOG]

Nov 1, 2019

Hello, I'm Gen, an intern. People often say my name sounds masculine, but I'm actually just a normal girl. I'm originally from China, and this is my second year in Japan. My Japanese is still quite poor, but I've been diligently researching the dictionary while writing, so I hope you'll read to the end.

While appearing at fashion weeks in New York and London, the fashion festival "LABELHOOD," held in conjunction with Shanghai Fashion Week in China, provides a platform for newly established young designers to present their work. With this momentum, young Chinese designers are creating a new wave of Chinese fashion.

I wanted to share the wonders of Chinese DC brands with my Japanese readers, so I've selected seven of my favorite young Chinese women's brands and designers that are worthy of attention.

UMAWANG

UMA WANG is a brand launched by designer ZHI WANG in 2009. As China's most pioneering designer brand, it debuted at Milan Fashion Week in 2011 and has been competing at Paris Fashion Week since last year.

When you think of UMA WANG, the first image that comes to mind is earth-like colors. Like nature in its natural state, it is simple yet exudes vitality.

UMA WANG, which began as a knitwear brand, is particularly particular about fabric. Designer ZHI WANG is particularly passionate about vintage items, and everything from fabric processing to clothing design is created using traditional techniques.

"Fabric is the most important part to me. The design exists only because of the fabric," says designer ZHI WANG.

In Japan, UMA WANG is sold at select shops 24th AUGUST, B'2nd, and ATRUM. It can also be purchased from the online shopping site Farfetch (farfetch.com).

XUZHI

Designer XUZHI turned 27 this year. While studying at Central Saint Martins, CHEN became interested in fabric development during her internships at Craig Green and JW Anderson, and launched the brand "XUZHI" in 2015, the year she graduated.

Designer XUZHI CHEN is often inspired by artwork, expressing threads like brushstrokes and designing clothes as if they were a second skin, like painting a picture.

Combining traditional Chinese hand-knitting techniques with a European aesthetic sensibility, "XUZHI" expresses the supple and delicate beauty unique to Oriental women through materials and colors.

"XUZHI" has not yet arrived in Japan, but you can purchase it on the online shopping site Farfetch (farfetch.com)!

BAN XIAOXUE

BAN XIAOXUE's source of inspiration is nature.

BAN XIAOXUE offers both men's and women's clothing, and offers genderless designs that are not bound by concepts of gender but explore the commonalities between the two. It incorporates Eastern aesthetics into traditional culture and expresses them in silhouettes that suit scenes in modern society. It pays particular attention to the texture of the fabric and craftsmanship.

Unfortunately, BAN XIAOXUE is currently only available in China. I look forward to the day it arrives in Japan.
