Louis Moinet Memories Spirit, a 40mm redesign of the Memories

Apr 3, 2023
LOUIS MOINET, the Swiss luxury watch brand whose sole distributor in Japan is GM International Co., Ltd., will release the Memories Spirit on April 12th.

About the MemoriesCollection

A development project for a new collection was launched in 2014 to commemorate the brand's 10th anniversary. The Memories collection was then launched in 2016, marking the 200th anniversary of the invention of the world's first chronograph by watchmaker Louis Moinet, the brand's roots. The concept of the collection is "a watch that makes the chronograph look its most beautiful." We pursue aesthetic excellence by treating the chronograph not simply as a watch mechanism, but as the focal point of the design. To achieve this, we collaborated with Concept, a movement manufacturer that has worked with the brand since its founding, to develop an original movement that places the entire chronograph mechanism on the front (dial side) of the watch. Housed in a 46mm case, this caliber, comprised of a total of 311 parts, expresses the grandeur of the chronograph, making Memories a collection that has now become the brand's signature.

After two more years of trial and error, we came up with the ingenious idea of combining a domed crystal glass crystal with a new inner bezel, resulting in Memories Spirit, a redesign of Memories in a 40mm diameter while retaining the 311 parts count.

Design of Memories Spirit

Memories Spirit was born from the pursuit of various elements, including aesthetics, wearability and functionality. It is a timepiece that combines traditional Swiss watchmaking know-how with rich artistry. In addition to enhancing its formal impression, the design of the previous model, Memories, has been evolved to symbolize the brand's high level of craftsmanship.

In order to reduce the case diameter by 6mm without changing the number of parts of the 311, the bezel was eliminated and a new inner bezel was adopted, compressing the width. The inner bezel has a double structure consisting of a mountain-shaped ring with a scale and transparent sapphire crystal. By making the crystal dome-shaped, space is created between the inner bezel and the crystal, ensuring visibility of the scale. In addition, the interior of the watch is easily visible from any direction, allowing you to enjoy the three-dimensionality and power of the mechanism.

The overall form of the watch incorporates aerodynamic technology used in airplanes and racing cars to control airflow. This improves the tactile feel of the surface and the wearing comfort. The grade 5 titanium case weighs just 18g, reducing strain on the wrist. The lugs are openworked, with horizontal cutouts, and the strap is specially designed to fit perfectly with the case.

Memorise Spirit Chronograph

The Memorise Spirit elegantly expresses the allure of watchmaking mechanisms. The chronograph mechanism visible on the dial is one of Louis Moinet's iconic designs. The design of this modern chronograph is inspired by the world's first chronograph, created by watchmaker Louis Moinet in 1816. It was an astronomical observation chronograph with an exceptionally high beat of 216,000 vibrations per hour (vph), which was an exceptionally high beat for its time, and it holds the Guinness World Record for the first chronograph.

Of all the complications found in watches, the chronograph is one of the most practical in modern society. It is also the mechanism most closely connected to the wearer, as the wearer can operate it themselves. The Memories Spirit chronograph uses a column wheel mechanism, which offers easy pushers, stable operation, and durability. This watch is equipped with the unique in-house caliber LM84, which places the chronograph mechanism on the front (dial side) to maximize the beauty of the chronograph mechanism, including the column wheel. The movement features 147 components that make up the chronograph mechanism on the front side, and 164 components that make up the automatic winding mechanism on the back, creating a modern and spectacular design.

About Louis Moinet

1. The Watchmaker Louis Moinet
Louis Moinet (1768-1853) was a master watchmaker who created the world's first chronograph mechanism. He was also a rare genius, possessing talents in a variety of fields, including art and astronomy.
Born in Bourges, France, he pursued watchmaking as a hobby from a young age. Developing an interest in art, he moved to Rome at the age of 20, where he studied architecture, sculpture, and painting for five years. He then taught at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he interacted with many renowned artists, rekindling his passion for watches.
In 1800, he began full-time watchmaking training in Switzerland, where he quickly distinguished himself and became renowned as a watchmaker to royal courts. He demonstrated his skills by crafting watches for VIP clients around the world, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, the King of Russia, and the Queen of France. His style, which was said to be ahead of its time by a century, combined the essence of art with cutting-edge technology, a style that combined cutting-edge technology with the essence of art. The 216,000 vph chronograph manufactured in 1816 is recognized by two Guinness World Records: as the world's first chronograph and the world's first high-frequency watch.
The watchmaking treatise "Trait d'Horlogerie," which took 20 years to write and was published in 1848, was the culmination of watchmaker Louis Moinet's work and became the bible for the watch industry thereafter. However, his name, which was dedicated not to status or fame but to the creation of the finest watches, was eventually forgotten.

2. The Birth of the Louis Moinet Watch Brand
In order to reintroduce watches embodying the spirit of watchmaker Louis Moinet to the world, Jean-Marie Schaller founded the independent watch brand Louis Moinet in Saint-Blaise, Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 2004. All Louis Moinet watches are produced as one-of-a-kind or limited editions and are classified as "Cosmic Art" or "Mechanical Wonder." Many of their creations use rare parts made from meteorites and ancient materials from space. Based on the four values of "Uniqueness," "Creativity," "Art & Design," and "Rarity," the brand has received more than 30 awards from numerous prestigious organizations and competitions, including UNESCO, the Good Design Award, and the Red Dot Design Award.
