Grow with the penguins! Chiharu Sakazaki, the Suica penguin artist, sells his artwork at Isetan

Feb 10, 2015

Art & Frame on the 5th floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building will be holding a limited-time event from March 4th to 17th, selling "penguin artwork" by illustrator and picture book author Chiharu Sakazaki. Sakazaki has worked on characters for a wide range of industries, including the penguin characters for JR East's contactless IC card "Suica," the "Kakukaku Shikajika" characters for Daihatsu's "Move Conte," and, in January 2015, Monex Securities' "Kabubu and Friends." This time, the store will focus on Sakazaki's penguins and introduce items that allow you to enjoy watching your child grow up alongside the penguins. The "Let's Grow Together Penguin Height Chart" (33,500 yen) features height chart markings with numbers and penguins. Penguins are depicted next to the scale, with "little penguins" at the lower markings (short heights) and "emperor penguins," the largest of all penguins, at the highest markings (185cm). This height chart also comes with "fish stickers" to prevent damage to the pole, ensuring parents and children can enjoy measuring together.

The "Let's Walk Together Penguin Footprint Art" (15,000 yen) features a giclee print of a penguin and its footprints. There's a deliberately left-over space in the upper right corner where you can press your child's footprints or handprints, creating a record of their growth.

This footprint art and height chart are part of the store's "Only MI 2015 Spring Campaign," promoting exclusive items, and the chart itself is autographed by the artist himself. The first 50 customers to purchase any of the items will receive a "Chiharu Sakazaki original postcard with stamp." If dropped off in a mailbox on the same floor, the postcard will be delivered to their child or grandchild. Also during the exhibition, a "Penguin in All Forms" corner will be set up, featuring acrylic paintings (¥25,000 each) of 100 different penguin poses, including "walking," "turning around," and "diving." A signing session with Sakazaki is scheduled for March 4th and 15th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The buyer in charge said, "I hope this event will deepen the bond between you and your children and grandchildren through art. Rather than simply selling illustrations for children, I want to communicate through events and products that naturally foster children's creativity and expressiveness from an early age."
