On February 25th, Penhaligon's launched the new "Trade Route Collection" (three varieties, ¥22,000 each). The new collection also includes a limited-edition fragrance, "Essaouira Eau de Parfum" (¥25,000). The "Trade Route Collection" is inspired by a poem by 19th-century poet John Masefield, which describes the River Thames at the time. The poem evokes the era's spirit of adventure and luxury, as well as the docks stocked with spices, ivory, tea, medicines, cigars, and wine from around the world. The limited-edition fragrance, "Essaouira Eau de Parfum," is currently available at the Isetan Shinjuku Men's Store. It will also be available at the Hankyu Umeda Main Store and the official online shop from March 4th. "Essaouira" is Morocco's first port city, established in the 19th century. Various goods traveled by sea, mainly along the sea route to London. This fragrance evokes the many trade goods of the time, and is both sensual and exotic. The top notes feature bergamot and saffron, with the bitter notes of absinthe and davana lurking beneath. The middle notes feature rose, carnation, and jasmine, which gradually evolve into animal notes of lapdanum and amber. The base notes combine the resinous notes of oud and myrrh with the sweetness of vanilla and musk, and the smoky notes of guaiac and sandalwood for a woody finish.
In addition, three new fragrances are being rolled out nationwide as part of the same "Trade Route Collection."
"Lavantium Eau de Toilette" (100ml/22,000 yen) is inspired by the many trade goods of the time. The top notes evoke rum, with saffron, davana, and absinthe reminiscent of rum. Floral heart notes of rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang are complemented by a spicy kick from clove and cardamom. Base notes include smoky guaiac and sandalwood, oud, amber, myrrh, and vanilla. "Lothair Eau de Toilette" (100ml/22,000 yen) is inspired by the "Tea Clipper," a ship that transported tea leaves to London. The top notes begin with the salty kick of grapefruit and juniper berry, intermingled with the green scent of fig leaves. The smoky middle notes of black tea then spread, and the base notes evoke the deck of a sailing ship. Cedar, wengewood, and ambergris evoke the woody scent of a varnished deck. "Empresa Eau de Toilette" (100ml/22,000 yen) is inspired by the silk and pearls given to London's upper class. After a fruity opening of blood orange, blackberry, and peach, rose and neroli add floral color to the middle notes, while patchouli and vanilla create a sensual final note, complemented by the sweetness of cocoa and maltol.
