Feb 20, 2023
Miu Miu's short film project, "Women's Stories," launched in 2011, has been shot by internationally acclaimed female film directors, who use their uniquely feminine sensibilities to vividly depict worlds that are sometimes beautiful, sometimes mysterious, and sometimes fantastical.

The 24 short films produced so far each depict a different cinematic world, but what they all have in common is that they question timeless themes. How do women see themselves? How do women see each other? Hasn't appearance always been a reflection of women's thoughts and intellect, inseparable from sensuality and pleasure? In other words, what should a woman be? "Women's Story" was born from a request to female directors to create a film that would offer a sharp celebration of 21st-century femininity: one that would appeal to women's sensibilities, inspire self-reflection, and embrace complexity and contradictions in the old and the new.

In "Women's Story," not only do the actresses and models appear, but the Miu Miu collection plays a key role throughout the film. Miu Miu's clothing drives the story, sometimes emphasizing it and sometimes offering conflict. Power and desire, vanity and decoration, rituals and rules, dreams and nightmares. Every moment of a woman's daily life is filled with various elements. "Women's Stories" captures these moments and lets the clothes speak for themselves.

Previous films have been screened at the Venice Days program and New York Fashion Week. The latest film, "EYE TWO TIMES MOUTH," directed by Lila Avilés, premiered at London's Curzon Mayfair Cinema on February 15, 2023. All previously released films, along with exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, are available to view on the Miu Miu website. The film will also be available on the online streaming service MUBI.

■ Synopsis
Luz, a gallery worker, dreams of becoming an opera singer. She then receives an invitation to audition for "Madame Butterfly," a performance at Mexico City's Grand Theatre. As she devotes herself to rehearsals, her friends Lucien and Chio teach her how to use her voice and a choreography called hand dancing. They tell her, "Your mouth is twice as big as your eyes." All of this is a gift from the god who rules the world. "EYE TWO TIMES MOUTH," directed by Lila Avilés, is the 25th installment in Miu Miu's "Women's Stories." In this short film series, talented international female directors explore vanity and femininity in the 21st century.

Sixteen years ago, Avilés worked on a production of "Madame Butterfly" in Mexico City. It was her first encounter with opera, and she says she "fell in love." Puccini's tragic story of intercultural attachment and betrayal magically combined with her interest in humans and animals. "Madame Butterfly" also taught Avilés the overlap between Mexican and Japanese mystical philosophies. She went on to work in the theater world, working "in makeup, set design, stage sound, and directing," while also learning the importance of respect and consideration for others while fulfilling her role as a mother. She says she was thrilled when she was asked to create this series. "As someone who is passionate about stories, this series is something I've always wanted to be a part of. When I found out I was chosen, I was overjoyed," he said.

The lead character, Luz, is played by Akemi Endo, a Mexico City-based soprano whose grandfather, Kensaku Endo, emigrated to Mexico after World War II. Renowned tenor Alan Pingaron plays Lucien, while veteran actress Irene Akiko plays Chio. The story of "EYE TWO TIMES MOUTH" explores the concept of a Japanese proverb: "The subtle flapping of a butterfly's wings can be felt on the other side of the world." This metaphorical transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly tells the story of Luz, a thoughtful and sensitive woman who dreams of change. When Luz takes to the stage as Butterfly, the protagonist of Puccini's story, she is dazzling and we witness a complete transformation. Everything is connected in the story: the personal and mythical past, the hands, ears, eyes and mouth. As Lila Aviles says, "That's what travel is all about."
