
This April, a flurry of Mexican food shops opened in Tokyo. The following five shops are all new openings or making their first appearance in Japan. From quick fast-food eateries to full-dining restaurants, there are many ways to enjoy them. Another plus point is that Mexican food offers many delicious and healthy options, such as tacos made with plenty of fresh vegetables. Mexican food is currently on the rise, and it looks like it might be heading for a major boom.
■TACO RiCO
Opening on April 8th, TACO RiCO (2nd floor, Ark Mori Building, 1-12-32 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo) is a shop that serves handmade Mexican tacos and burritos made to order. The authentic tacos are made in-house, with meat marinated in 10 spices wrapped in corn tortillas and served with fresh salsa.
■Aloha Amigo
Aloha Amigo (Six Harajuku Terrace, 5-16-13 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), which began full-scale operations in April, is a new fusion cafe and dining establishment that combines Hawaiian and Mexican cuisine. It offers a lineup of wellness and spicy dishes and drinks, including tacos.
■GYG
Guzman y Gomez (GYG for short), which made its Japanese debut on April 29th (GOOD MEAL MARKET, 2nd floor, Laforet Harajuku, 1-11-6 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), is a premium Mexican fast food restaurant from Australia that has more than 50 stores worldwide. It is popular for its casual and quick service where you can enjoy tacos and burritos.
■Taco Bell
Taco Bell (2-25-14 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), which opened its first store in Japan on April 21st, is a Mexican fast food chain that was founded in the United States in 1962 and has since expanded to over 6,000 stores worldwide. In addition to fresh tacos and burritos, it offers Japan-exclusive dishes such as the Shrimp & Avocado Burrito and Taco Rice.
■O'tacos
O'tacos (3-14-1 KAZUMI BLD. 1F, Shinbashi, Minato-ku, Tokyo), which had its grand opening on April 27th, recommends its Mediterranean-inspired pastor tacos, which are made with high-quality Mexican and domestic ingredients. They also offer a wide selection of drinks, including over 100 types of tequila and chocolate latte, a drink traditionally served in the Aztec style.
