Sponsored by Chanel, Gucci, and Comme des Garçons. Enjoy the connection between the edgy theme and the venue at "Kyotography"

May 7, 2015

Now in its third year, KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival has become a staple of Kyoto's spring art scene. This year's theme is "TRIBE - Where Are You?" The exhibition will take place at 15 venues, including traditional Kyoto townhouses normally closed to the public, and is sponsored by Chanel, Gucci, Comme des Garçons, Hearst Fujingaho, and others. In Gion-Shinbashi, a popular tourist spot during Golden Week, Pass the Baton will open a shop this summer in a teahouse-style building. The exhibition (Fosco Maraini/Island of the Diving Women: Lugano Cultural Museum Collection) is being held in this building, attracting increasing attention from fashion professionals every year. "All that's not me" by Paris-based photographer Kimiko Yoshida, supported by Gucci, is a self-portrait of the artist, but it is a painterly work that is completely unadulterated digitally. The artist himself will be present during the exhibition, and his works will be exhibited at Karakuan, a partially relocated mansion owned by the Noguchi family, a kimono merchant, where tea master Kobori Enshu spent his final years. Special works, mounted on hanging scrolls in Kyoto yuzen décor, can be enjoyed alongside the breeze blowing through the small garden, a unique initiative for the event, befitting Gucci, whose headquarters are based in Florence, Kyoto's sister city. Sputniko's "Tranceflora - Amy's Luminous Silk," also taking place at the Gucci Shinjuku store, showcases Nishijin-ori dresses crafted by Hosoo. Both exhibitions, featuring collaborations with Kyoto's traditional craftsmanship, further deepen the relationship between Kyoto and Gucci. Yusuke Yamatani's solo exhibition, held at the Mumeisha (Yoshida family) Kyoto machiya, like Karakuan, is notable for its thematic focus and installation-style installation, which utilizes the space, formerly a merchant's shop dealing in white fabrics. The artist's touch is evident in the details, such as the display of karuta tailoring. Speaking of venues not usually visited, artist Lucas Fauria himself will be giving a talk at the Yuhisai Kodokan, a "mountain retreat in the city" located west of the Imperial Palace. The exhibition of works by Ronron & Inri, which utilizes the shoin (study room), tea room, and garden at Kenninji Ryosokuin Temple, is intriguing, with its theme of daytime connectedness through "cafes." Marc Riboud's "Alaska," held at the 280-year-old Kondaya Genbei Kurokura, is a traveling exhibition from January's Chanel Nexus Hall in Ginza. The contrast between the white of his artwork and the black plaster of the storehouse is intriguing. Furthermore, Roger Ballen, whose work was used for the back print of Comme des Garçons Homme Plus's 2015-16 Autumn/Winter Finale jacket, will be holding his first solo exhibition in Japan at Horikawa Oike Gallery, and a new video work will be on display at the Comme des Garçons Kyoto store. The striking work of this South African artist is beautifully combined with a gallery open to the public. Another characteristic of this exhibition is its focus on art and music culture from the 1980s onward, including Oliver Sieber's photographs of young people obsessed with subcultures gathering in imaginary clubs. Also during the exhibition, Baudouin Muanda, who photographed "The Aesthetics of Congolese Gentlemen: Sapeurs," currently on display at the Murakami Jyu Building, will be shooting new works in Kyoto. A variety of special programs were held, including a talk event with DJs Shuya Okino and Naruyoshi Kikuchi and a "Special Jazz Dinner" featuring a live performance by the Kyoto Jazz Sextet at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto, in conjunction with an exhibition of Francis Wolff's work, which he photographed for Blue Note record jackets, currently on display at Shimadai Gallery. The "KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival" runs until May 10th.
