Masterpieces by Van Gogh and Vermeer come to Japan for the first time! London's National Gallery exhibition opens at the National Museum of Western Art

Event Date:2020.03.03-06.14
Mar 20, 2019
The London National Gallery, one of the world's leading temples of art, will hold its first-ever large-scale exhibition of works from its collection at the National Museum of Western Art in Ueno, Tokyo, from March 3 to June 14, 2020.

Located in Trafalgar Square in central London, the London National Gallery, one of the world's leading temples of art, specializes in Western paintings and continues to captivate many with its outstanding, high-quality collection. However, since the museum's permanent collection is dominated by works, it is extremely strict about loaning artworks, and in its nearly 200-year history, it has never exhibited works from its collection outside the UK. This exhibition will be the largest-scale exhibition of works from the London National Gallery's collection ever held anywhere in the world.

Approximately 60 masterpieces of Western painting, spanning a wide range of eras, regions and genres, from the Italian Renaissance to Post-Impressionism, will be on display at once. This will unravel the history of a comprehensive collection of European art, built in the UK. In addition, world-famous masterpieces from the museum's collection, such as Vermeer's Young Woman Seated at a Virginal, Rembrandt's Portrait at 34, and Van Gogh's Sunflowers, will make their long-awaited first appearance in Japan. This will be the first time all of the works will be on display in Japan, making it a truly historic exhibition.
