To mark the 80th anniversary of Alphonse Mucha's death, an exhibition tracing his work and his influence on future generations, "Mucha for Everyone: From Mucha to Manga -- The Magic of Lines," will be held at Bunkamura The Museum in Shibuya from July 13th to September 29th.

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), active in Paris from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, made his name as a pioneer of Art Nouveau. His elegant and delicate style is highly popular not only in Japan but around the world, and the gorgeous posters he created, which could be described as the "magic of lines," continue to fascinate people even 80 years after his death. This exhibition, "Mucha for Everyone: From Mucha to Manga - The Magic of Lines," features approximately 250 pieces, including Mucha's posters and other graphic works, Meiji-era Japanese literary magazines that were strongly influenced by his work, graphic art works that sparked a major movement on the American West Coast and in London in the 1960s, and works by Japanese manga and graphic artists. This unprecedented attempt to unravel the secrets of Mucha's timeless popularity through his works is a first. One of the highlights is the numerous Japanese literary magazines, manga, and illustrations that were influenced by Mucha. The cover of Meiji-era poet Yosano Akiko's collection of poems, "Midaregami," shows the influence of Mucha's 1896 poster, "The Zodiac." Additionally, numerous works by leading Japanese graphic artists and manga artists, including Amano Yoshitaka and Yamagishi Ryoko, are on display. Enjoy discovering new connections with Mucha's works.
The exhibition will also feature many of Mucha's precious illustrations from his twenties, as well as books and crafts from his personal collection, tracing his path to becoming a world-renowned poster artist.
Why not come and experience for yourself how Mucha influenced so many people and his works, and how he is still present in the designs we see today? The exhibition will begin in Tokyo from July 13th to September 29th, and will then travel to six other venues across Japan: Kyoto, Sapporo, Nagoya, Shizuoka (tentative), and Matsumoto (tentative).
