The Togatta Onsen area at the foot of Mount Zao in Miyagi Prefecture is a famous production area of traditional kokeshi dolls. Kokeshi craftsman Eitaro Sato has been involved in making traditional kokeshi dolls in Togatta since his teens. Known as a "legend in the kokeshi world," Sato learned from the ancient works of his grandfather and father, both accomplished craftsmen, and developed his own free-spirited, unrestrained style. Sato's "Wooden Doll: Flowers of the Tempyo Era" and "Woman in Plum Small Pattern" are captivating works of art.
Sato's traditional kokeshi and wooden dolls are currently only available at his own studio, "Kobo Kime," in Togatta Onsen. His first solo exhibition in 25 years at Isetan Shinjuku will feature a wide selection of his works. He will be present from March 6th to 10th, and a talk show will be held on March 9th at 3:00 PM.
Whether you're a kokeshi collector or not, this is a rare opportunity not to be missed for lovers of traditional Japanese culture and craftsmanship.
