The "New Hokusai Exhibition: HOKUSAI UPDATED" is running from January 17th to March 24th at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi, Tokyo. This is the first large-scale, comprehensive Hokusai exhibition to be held in Tokyo in over a decade. A preview was held on the 16th prior to the opening, revealing the details. From his debut work at age 20 to his final work at age 90, the exhibition explores Hokusai's 70-year career as an artist, dividing it into six chapters based on the evolution of his style and his most famous pen names: the Shunro Period (ages 20-35), the Sōri Period (ages 36-44), the Katsushika Hokusai Period (ages 46-50), the Daito Period (ages 51-60), the Tameichi Period (ages 61-74), and the Gakkyō Rojin Manji Period (ages 75-90). The venue will exhibit approximately 480 works (with changes during the exhibition period), including "Kobo Daishi Shuhozu" and "Hokusai Manga." By browsing Hokusai's work, visitors will be able to understand how he constantly updated his style and painting techniques.

In addition, many masterpieces collected from Japan and abroad, as well as works being shown for the first time, will be on display, including "Sunflowers" (original painting), "Kana-tehon Chushingura," "Beauty at the Round Window," and "Kamakura Scenic Views Scroll," a work from the transitional period between the Shunro and Sori periods. Furthermore, all 118 "Surimono (printed works) handed down from the Tsuwano Domain" will be exhibited in four periods, and the early hand-painted "Shokizu" painting will be on display only in the first half, and the "Sumida River Both Banks Scenery Scroll" will also be on display for a limited time as a special exhibit. The exhibits will be changed throughout the exhibition, making it something to enjoy no matter how many times you visit.

There will also be a video corner where you can watch an interview with the late Nagata Seiji, a leading expert on Hokusai. Mika Negishi, a curator of the exhibition and an ukiyo-e researcher, said, "Hokusai is generally known for his paintings of waves and red Mount Fuji (from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series), but the exhibition also gives a sense of how much effort Hokusai put in from his debut works to the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. I hope that by seeing previously unknown works, visitors will be able to get a new impression of Hokusai."
